Greek Life Wasn't For Me

Until I made the best decision of my life

I go to a small private college in the middle of New Jersey. However, even though it is fairly small, Rider University offers a surplus of extra-curricular clubs and student run organizations. The last organization I had ever seen myself joining would be Greek Life. I wanted nothing to do with it. The yelling, the chanting, the bright colors and the crowd where every seemed to always be to happy and to perky all the time. I’ve seen all those movies where the sorority girls are all blonde, skinny and hate anyone who isn’t apart of their group. Recruiting or rushing to be in a sorority just didn’t fit my ideal college experience. I wanted to meet new people my second semester of the school year and really wanted to figure out to do it quick and soon.

Apparently, the first week students came back from winter break was a huge week for the Greek Community here at Rider. With little knowledge of knowing what I was getting into, it only took a few days for my friends, who were all rushing, to convince me to give it a shot. By the time I had come back from winter break, I was ready for rush week. During the month apart, from all my friends, we all stayed in touch. Most of the conversations I have had with my friends while being away from them was them telling me all about the wonders of going Greek. I took their words for it and promised them I would give the recruitment process a try.

After one of the longest weeks of my entire life, after meeting members from all the sororities on campus, I was given a big to Phi Sigma Sigma, Theta Eta Chapter. Little did I know that receiving that bid letter would be the best day of the rest of my college career. Getting a bid card means that you are wanted somewhere. Getting a bid card means that you will have a new group of friends you probably never thought you would meet or socialize with on campus. Getting a bid card meant that these people I was to start becoming close to, would be the greatest group of girls that are going to be my friends for life. After the realization that college is all about trying new things, I have come to a conclusion that joining Phi Sigma Sigma was the best decision I have made.

Fast forward a month, and that statement still stands true. In only a few short 6 weeks, I have grown closer to girls who have become my proud and joy. I have been given friends that have already learned so much about me and only want to get to know me more. I have been blessed with a beautiful Big sister and a wonderful twin. My Greek family is expansive, loud, crazy, dysfunctional but perfect at the same time. All the girls in my chapter form a sisterhood that can’t compare to any other. Between bonding over our philanthropy and spending countless hours together, I cannot wait to see what the future holds for all of us.

Sisters,

We are going to have great days, bad days, times of laughter and times of tears but nothing will ever break the beautiful bonds we will forever share. Know that I will always be here for you, through the good and the bad. Thank you for taking me in with such open arms even if I originally wanted nothing to do with Greek Life. Thank you for giving me a chance to be apart of something bigger than myself.

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
