Did you know that every April Prevent Child Abuse America celebrates #GreatChildhoods during Child Abuse Prevention Month?
I surely didn't until I got to college and joined Greek Life.
If not for Kappa Delta, I never would have know that this nonprofit existed, let alone that April was Child Abuse Prevention Month.
If not for KD I never would have known about Pinwheels for Prevention or the pinwheel gardens that are put out during the month of April to raise awareness.
"In 2008, Prevent Child Abuse America introduced the pinwheel as the new national symbol for child abuse prevention through Pinwheels for Prevention®. What our research showed, and what our experiences since then have borne out, is that people respond to the pinwheel. By its very nature, the pinwheel connotes whimsy and childlike notions. In essence, it has come to serve as the physical embodiment, or reminder, of the great childhoods we want for all children."
Often times in today's society, Greek Life has a bad reputation, which is unfortunate because so much good comes from it. We are not "paying for friends" like the stereotypical saying often associated with Greek Life.
We assist philanthropies that need our support.
We are declaring the right majors and finding the right careers through the opportunities Greek Life provides.
We are learning how to be leaders, both internally in our chapter and externally in the community.
We are overcoming obstacles and achieving goals that we could never have dreamed of without the help of our sisters/brothers.
“If you aren't part of it, it's hard to understand. If you are part of it, it's harder to explain. Unfortunately, negative media representation is all Greek Life seems to get these days. Sometimes the only thing we can do is work hard and hope that our continued efforts of philanthropy, sisterhood/brotherhood, community service, and personal development will outshine the negative stereotype.” - Emily, Kappa Delta member
“Going Greek has given me so many opportunities to get more involved with my community. Without my chapter I never would have been able to pull off an event as big as our annual Shamrock ‘N Score where we raise money for PCAA and SAFEChild Raleigh." - Anna, Vice President of Community Service for the Eta Upsilon Chapter
In the two years I have been a member of Kappa Delta, my chapter has raised over $53,000 for SAFEChild Raleigh and Prevent Child Abuse America. I am confident to say that I would not be half the person I am since college, if not for my sorority. The connections and networking skills I have developed through Kappa Delta cannot be taught in a classroom or from any other organization.
These life lessons are ones that are already making myself and so many others successful, contributing members of society in our early adulthood years.
