Greek Life In The Movies

As we know, there have been stereotypes and judgments about us for before we were in the organization. Greek life is in movies, TV shows and around life, in general. There are not always good things said about Greek life. It’s usually entails stereotypes and judgments.

Sydney White

"Sydney White" is a movie about a girl who just wants to be in the sorority that her mother was in. This movie goes through the recruitment process before actually getting the “pin.” It includes hazing and picking out the flaws of the girls. Over all, it would not be an experience that I would want to go through, and I am very glad Greek life is not like that. The hazing examples are throwing lunch meat at the girls while they sing, dining and dashing a guy at the diner and standing there while the older girls tell them what to “fix” on themselves. If I was told to fix something about myself, I would definitely not want to join that sorority.

21 & Over

This movie shows a side of sorority girls that doesn't actually happen. The girls “punish” guys for being caught in their sorority house. This is something that would never actually happen and would get the sorority in a bunch of trouble. We would definitely never be hooded, and we would never have a male strip and be spanked for trespassing.

House Bunny

House Bunny is about a girl that was kicked out of the Playboy mansion and becomes a house mom for a sorority for socially awkward girls. There are things that go on in the movie that would never happen in an actual sorority house. Usually house moms are not the Playboy bunny type in the first place. They are sweet older ladies who just want to help keep the house clean and the girls safe. The moms don’t want to make the girls something they are not.

Neighbors

In the movie, "Neighbors," the frat house is located next to a family house. There is a lot of drug use, fireworks and alcohol. The family next door and members of the fraternity are at war to take control of the parties and noise. The main character, played by Zac Efron, is the life of the party and never wants the party to end. He isn’t serious about his future. He just wants to party, which is that way for a lot of people in college, but not everyone. There are more people that are serious about their futures. In the end, Zac Efron takes the fall so his other fraternity brother can have a chance at his future. This shows that there are fraternities out there that care and don’t just care about drinking and parties.

Legally Blonde

"Legally Blonde" is all about a sorority girl that wants to get her man back by getting into Harvard Law School. She gets in, but just because she is very “unique” and therefore can add to the diversity of the school. She learns that he is already dating someone new, and therefore she wants to succeed. She wants to show her ex-boyfriend that she is more than a joke. She can succeed, and she will be more than just a typical blonde sorority girl.

There are sorority stereotypes about anything and everything. There are movies where they overcome these stereotypes and show that we are more than stupid blondes or girls who just care about what we look like. We are always trying to change this stereotype. The Greek system is nothing like it is in the movies. Hazing and other things such as that do occur, but there is a lot of punishment that can occur if headquarters find out. Greek life is so much more than their stereotypes.

The infamous RBF is something I have and am known for. It’s kind of exhausting to be asked if you're okay all the time or being told to smile more. Girls with RBF get judged to be mean and rude much quicker than the girl who is always smiling. It’s true and just plain natural for someone who is generally smiling all the time to come off as more trustworthy and I've gotten used to it. I used to think that having a Resting Bitch Face was only a bad thing until I realized that just like anything else, it also has its perks. Having a permafrown with a piercing look comes with great power.

If I have learned one thing in my lifetime, it is that friends are a privilege. No one is required to give you their company and yet there is some sort of shared connection that keeps you together. And from that friendship, you may even find yourself lucky enough to have a few more friends, thus forming a group. Here are just a few signs that prove your current friend group is the ultimate friend group.
