Greek life is on almost every college campus in America, it's all around us. You usually can't go a day without seeing a Greek organization put on an event or go through recruitment.
Coming to college, I had no idea if Greek life was for me, but now, 8 months after I ran home, I am positive that it's for me. Greek life has given me so many amazing friendships and opportunities already that I would not have gotten if I hadn't joined Greek life. And I'm not alone, many other people in Greek life have been positively impacted by their time here.
Mason Patrick is a junior at Longwood University and is a member of Alpha Sigma Phi. He always knew he wanted to go Greek as it has positively impacted his family members. He grew up watching the MTV show "GREEK", which also aided in his decision to go Greek.
He holds many leadership positions in his fraternity such as Philanthropy Chair, New Membership Education Director & Secretary. He is also the Vice President of Membership Development on the Inter-Fraternity Council Executive Board. He loves being able to give back to the organization he says has given him so much.
Mason said, "Greek life has honestly changed my life. I've learned so many valuable leadership skills through my positions and experience. However, my greatest joy from going Greek is the people." Through Greek life, Mason has met friends that he knows will last a lifetime and will always have his back.
Mason's not alone in feeling this way. Longwood junior Taylor Johnson is a sister of Alpha Gamma Delta and also received a bid in the fall of 2017. She was recently elected to serve as President for the 2018-2019 academic year after serving as the Vice President of Membership this past spring.
Taylor said she always wanted to go Greek but got scared when recruitment came around her freshman year. She then went to an Alpha Gam open house that spring and felt like she was ready to go through recruitment. She felt she could really be herself around the sisters and always had fun with them.
Taylor said, "Going Greek has made me gain a lot of confidence. My sisters always boost me up." She says that everyone should sign up for recruitment, even if they are only slightly interested. You never know what might come from it, you might even find your home.
If you are at all interested, go for it! Greek life has impacted so many people for the better, and it may impact you too! This Saturday, September 22nd is Longwood University's CPC Mock Recruitment, sign up if you're interested! Go Greek and find your home.
