When I first started at Iowa State I was sure that Greek life wasn't for me. I convinced myself I was "too busy" and not "that type". If it wasn't for my roommate at the time, I wouldn't have explored that other side of college that I grew to love.
Being in a sorority is stereotyped as "paying for your friends", but, it's much more than that. More than living in a big house, more than taking hundreds of pictures on bid day and more than dressing up for what seems like every event. It's easy to knock it when you don't know it. People assume it's only about money, boys, taking pictures while "throwing what we know" and drinking, which couldn't be more wrong. Heres some reasons I hope can change your mind.
1. Academics
So far, Kappa Kappa Gamma (the sorority I'm in), has helped me adjust and has taught me a lot. The first few weeks of school were pretty intense and full of things to do. Kappa helped me by telling me what girls are in my classes, who is in my major and showed me study files from previous classes! The ladies in Kappa push each other everyday to thrive in their academics, give back to the community and to be a support system for a sister in need. Also, we are kept accountable for our GPA, study hours, community service and social media content.
2. Philanthropy
Philanthropies are more than community service and raising money. It's traditional to have one a semester and to get involved with your cause throughout that semester. They taught me to love why I'm doing it, and to actually want to help those in need. Also, going to other philantrophies helps them raise money and you get amazing food!
3. Sisterhood
Living with your sisters and best friends actually goes a long way. Who wouldn't want to live in a mansion with 50+ of their best friends? You basically have 50 closets, makeup bags and people to study with. On a more serious note, being in a sisterhood gives us a home away from home. Pure people we connect with and are completely open to talking to. Ladies who will be with you through the good times and the bad.
If you're involved in Greek life I hope you find this article relatable, and if you're thinking about going Greek I hope you do, It'll be one of the best decisions you'll every make!
