I am sure that you have all heard of Merriam and Webster and their dictionary, but I would like to introduce myself. I am Jesse and I would like to present to you a new form of dictionary related to Greek life.
Within the Greek life community, there are many words with meanings that are completely different from what was originally thought by Merriam and Webster. Let's take a look at some.
1. Rogue
MW: "A man who is dishonest or immoral."
GL: "A fraternity that has been kicked off campus and that is strictly off limits." If you get caught at a rogue fraternity, you're headed to standards and your sorority or fraternity might even be put on social probation.
2. Social Probation
MW: "A situation or period of time in which a person who has made a serious mistake or done something bad is watched and must behave well in order to not to be seriously punished."
GL: "A determined amount of time by the higher ups (Panhel) when you are not allowed to have fun."
3. Room Points
MW: "A unit of measurement."
GL: "Bribery for freshman involvement." If you need people to take a survey or download an app, offer some room points and there you go. Room points are given for pretty much everything related to your house and the more you have, the better room that you get. You also might have the first pick of closets, beds, and could get a parking spot.
4. Mixer
MW: "A machine used for mixing things."
GL: "A party often between one fraternity and one sorority, occasionally themed."
5. Date Party
MW: "An appointment to meet at a specified time; especially: a social engagement between two persons that often has a romantic character."
GL: "A night to get dressed up, drink, go on buses (often to Detroit), dance, hook up, and sleep on your date." It is also often a cause for stress because if you don't have a significant other, finding four people per year who you want to spend a night with can be very difficult.
6. Sober
MW: "Not drunk."
GL: Yes, I suppose that is true. It is also "an easy way to get a lot of room points." If you're a boy, and probably a pledge, you get to wear a cool neon orange shirt and monitor the door and bar. As a girl, you get a sick glow band bracelet!
7. Chapter
MW: "A period of time that is very different from the period of time before it."
GL: "A weekly meeting held at the fraternity/sorority house where attendance is taken and announcements that could have easily been sent out in an email are made."
8. Wednesday
MW: "The day of the week between Tuesday and Thursday."
GL: "The day when you get to show even more spirit for your sorority/fraternity because it's #WearEmWednesday." Wear any apparel sporting your letters and you could be featured on your house's Instagram or Tumblr, or maybe even by Panhels!
9. Group Chat
MW: "A number of people or things that are together or in the same place."
GL: "Nonstop notifications." Constant messages are being sent between your pledge class, other pledge classes in your sorority, and fraternity pledge classes.
10. Late Night
MW: "The time of darkness between one day and the next: the part of the day when no light from the sun can be seen and most people and animals sleep."
GL: The key word in MW's definition is most. Party people and party animals, whichever way you want to put it, are members of the Greek community and have no interest in sleeping. Late nights are "fraternity parties that typically begin somewhere between 11:30 and 12:00."
11. Social Schedule
MW: "A plan of things that will be done and the times when they will be done."
GL: "The most exciting e-mail you receive all week." This comes from your social chair and it tells you all of the parties that are planned for the week ahead, where they are, who they are with, and if there is a theme.
12. Standards
MW: "Ideas about morally correct and acceptable behavior."
GL: "A committee of members of your house who are not scary, despite popular belief." They are in charge of your consequences if you do something wrong, though.
13. FAC
MW: "An abbreviation for faculty or facsimile."
GL: "Friday After Class." Is there nice weather? Is there snow? It doesn't matter. Why not go party for a little while? Get ready for the weekend.
14. Darty
MW: They didn't know this one.
GL: "A party during the day like a tailgate or just an excuse to be drunk and not be in the library."
15. Panhel
MW: "Of or relating to the Greek-letter sororities or fraternities in American colleges and universities or to an association representing them."
GL: Good work, Merriam-Webster! You know something about Greek life! Panhel is in charge of all of the fraternities and sororities and making sure that everyone is following the rules and doing what they are supposed to do.
