Growing up things weren’t always easy. I was bullied in school, I never had a stable group of friends, I was dealing with the struggles of Type One Diabetes and in general the inability to fit in. I was a theater geek, which was actually pretty cool so why the word geek is typically placed with theater I have still yet to discover, and I was in the chorus. So you must be thinking wow she must have been so popular… No, I pretty much set myself up for social suicide since I wasn’t playing sports and let’s face it that was the only way you were “popular.” But what I didn’t know was that after high school, none of this even matters.
You leave home and get to decide who you are going to be. You have no connections from home, that is of course unless you chose the school that half your high school went too, but otherwise no one knows your past. So maybe you weren’t “cool” in high school, it's irrelevant. Then the best moment happens, you go to the organization fair and you meet your potential friends.
I found so much love and support in 40+ girls and I knew the moment I met them I had found my family, my support system, and a group that would understand my struggles and help to lift me up rather than put me down. I had found Delta Zeta. If It hadn’t been for this wonderful group of girls, I am not quite sure where I would be both academically and socially.
I never thought that I would be the one to join a sorority. I always said that I would never be a potential new member, but here I am today a Big. The moral of the story is, go for it. It may be out of your comfort zone, you may have said you would never do it and you may have friends that don’t understand Greek life, but taking that chance could be the best decision you make in your college career. I know I always have someone to call when the going gets tough, I don't have to worry about being lonely or bored, and the excitement you feel when you are reunited with your sisters after a long time apart is undeniably wonderful!
Much love to my Delta Zeta- Kappa Mu sisters, Thank you for all you do!
