Greek Freaks

We all know Greek Week is THE anticipated event of the entire semester, but to those who are not affiliated with any sorority or fraternity aka “GDIs” (God Damn Independents) you don’t understand that Greek Week isn’t just a competition between the entire organization…it's Christmas. It's the time of the year where everyone is jolly, everyone gets free shirts, and games played all week long. To us Greeks, this is the one week where we are allowed to all come together to push and shove in order to rule above all other sororities and fraternities. It's like The Hunger Games...but better. So let the games begin!

1. The night before opening day

It's the night before and you have frantically waited for the semester to finally start coming to a close, but not before you get a chance to cut loose for one last time. It's easy to say that you'll go to bed at a reasonable hour, but then we get distracted and watch old Greek week videos to get into the mind set of what's to come.

2. What do I wear?

This is crucial. Now for my school, Greek week usually falls in the second or third week in April, which it can look like it’s going to be a nice sunny day, but can quickly turn into a tornado warning. You put on the groups shirt that you may or may not even like, but you wear it anyway for the festivities. Now you fix your hair and makeup and for the guys, you put it in that up do that you know all the girls will love.

3. Competition

Its all fun and games… just kidding it’s not. Greek week is all about seeing who is the best of the best. Different events show where everyone where you stand on the totem pole.

4. Support your team… even if they suck

Everyone knows it sucks to lose, you know what’s worse then losing… having a team that doesn’t stick up for you when you do lose. Being supportive is key to having a good backbone for the next event. And when you do eventually win an event, it’s so much better because then there’s bragging rights.

5. Popularity contests

That’s all it is. The only advantage anyone has is if your frat or sorority has people on Panhel or IFC. Why do you think some people get the best themes or the best pairing… mhm.

6. “I thought I handed that in”

Getting all your work done before the week begins, is a hail Mary. Now while you still have to go to class, it's easy to fall behind for the time being. Late submissions, sleeping in class, and there is just not enough time in the world to get everything done. I swear the universe just saves the hardest and the longest assignments for this week specifically.

7. And the results are in

You either win or lose, regardless of the results, you still had a great week. It brought you closer to your pairing fraternity or sorority, hung out with your friends, and even raised some money for charity. All in all, it was a great week and you can’t wait for next year.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
