The "Great Clown Panic of 2016" Causes Terror Everywhere

What is with the clowns?! Honestly people?!

As I’m sure you are aware, several innocent cities and towns across the nation have been plagued by a CLOWN INFESTATION. That’s not really a sentence I’d ever thought I’d say. But yes. There are clowns. On the loose. Roaming around the streets we call home. Terrorizing people. Wreaking havoc. It’s wild.

This clown hysteria is making us unassuming college students go crazy. I never had a fear of clowns as a child; at birthday parties when all my friends ran away in fear, I would go right up to the friendly, colorfully cheery clown to get my balloon animal and walk away with a smile on my face. Even as I grew older, people dressed as “creepy clowns” for Halloween or in movies with growling teeth, wild hair, and perpetually angry eyebrows didn’t really faze me much. I’m scared of pretty much everything, but clowns just never really felt particularly frightening to me. But those days are gone. With the prospects of being fiercely attacked by a raging clown while walking across the campus I know and love, how could I not be shaking in my boots at the mere thought of one of these menacing circus villains?

The clown-mania phenomenon began mid-August in Greenville, South Carolina, where clowns were mysteriously spotted lurking in the woods. These clown sightings were incendiary to clown conspirators popping up and spreading this terror everywhere. Arrests have been made on countless clowns, and this madness has since reared its ugly head in dozens of states from California to New York City in what is being called the “Great Clown Panic of 2016”. Schools have closed for safety, college dorms have been on lockdown, police departments have sent out preemptive warnings against dressing as clowns for Halloween, some of the more innocent professional-birthday-clown-folk have begun utterly ridiculous “Clown Lives Matter” rallies nationwide… Our country is in a massive clown frenzy that cannot be tamed. All jokes aside, this is scary stuff.

All I'd like to know is

why? Why clowns? Why now? Why us? Just why. And they’re rapidly approaching. No one is safe. They were at Cedar Crest. They were on Tilghman. I’ve seen the pictures. This general progression leads me to the calamitous conclusion that MUHLENBERG IS NEXT. I’m not clowning around here. Stay safe out there, folks.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever.
