English 104 is one of my last core classes and I am ecstatic because I am over classes that remind me of high school. While I this class may seem like a drag, it has already challenged me to think about deeper concepts in the pop culture world as well as the reality of our own world. Good versus evil, it is a timeless argument that is often portrayed in pop culture. There is always a protagonist and an antagonist. Normally, it is a black and white area. The good guy and the bad guy. Hero and villain.
For my project, I am analyzing Suicide Squad due to the nature of the bad guys being the good guys. As the movie's purpose, my views along with others about good and evil were challenged due to the way the bad guys went on to save Gotham but on top the world. I got to thinking and maybe the pop culture world would be smart to incorporate this theme more into the songs, movies, and TV's. The movie shows that the long age battle between good and evil is more gray than black and white. People may have more good tendencies but have the ability to do bad. People may have bad tendencies but have the ability to do good.
Adding the gray area theme to pop culture has the potential to teach second chances. The gray area theme teaches others that the definite good and bad are not as definite as it may seem and that even though a person may have done bad before, it does not mean they will do bad in the future. Criminals have the chance to be rehabilitated due to the good that can shine through in them. You need to find what drives them and use it. It could be a psychological battle but it is still possible and can happen. Good and evil is a grey area. Not all black and white.
