Grateful For Family

Man, I am blessed.

Grateful For Family

As I watched my family prepare for Thanksgiving while writing this article, I realized that family is truly the best gift we have been given. I know that is not the case for everyone, and I am so sad for those who dread time with their families.

My family, however, is one amazing bunch. Like the stereotypical American family, the men lounge in the living room enjoying football while the women bustle around the kitchen. Everyone talks continually - no topic of conversation is too random to participate in. We discuss local news, the weather, and even popular diets. Laughter fills the house (and occasionally, so does smoke..) while the delicious Thanksgiving dishes are cooked to perfection.

I love how family holidays are a place of no pressure. You belong there. No one can doubt it or question it because these are your people. They will claim you, no matter how weird you get. They overlook your faults and offer an endless supply of hugs when needed. Family holidays are times when you can be unapologetically genuine and never worry about what others think of you.

I'm not sure how, but family get-togethers are the memories you can feel. The joy felt in those times can stick with you when you glance back at a picture or think about that day with the people you love. What a blessing it is to be surrounded by people God hand-picked to be my family. Each person has a unique personality and role that is different from the next, but just as valuable to the chemistry of the whole bunch.

Families support each other. I can't tell you how many of my family members have talked to me about these articles; how special it is to have people who value my thoughts enough to take time to read my articles! I never doubt whether my family is proud of the woman I am becoming. They are the greatest cheerleaders and make me so thankful to be part of their group.

Finally, I am thankful for the way families grow. Getting married has been such a new and wonderful experience because I've been welcomed into another family. It's so special to transition from a stranger to a part of the family - they chose to accept me. I am really grateful for that. I'm now a part of two really awesome families with people who love me, love Jesus, and love each other.

No matter what comes my way, I know my family will be by my side. They are so special to me and I hope to never take them for granted.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
