The saying "the grass is always greener on the other side" has been around for much longer than I have been alive. People throw it around in times of struggle and complaints, when we fail to appreciate what we already have. We always want the next best thing–never satisfied with how good life already is, just waiting for the inevitable best without appreciating the current better. It's simple things that we just want to complain about. We always feel like we are somehow missing out. And often, if we discover what the other side is truly like, we want our old side back.
If you live on the East coast, you yearn to move West. When you work hard to be able to move across the country, you find yourself missing the cold weather and the staples of your old life.
If you have curly brown hair, you want straight blonde hair. When you dye and treat your hair to be just what you want, you realize your natural hair was actually what you preferred.
If you are good at writing, you think it's useless and try to excel at math. When you study so hard and ace a math test, you find yourself missing the creativity that comes with being a good writer.
If you're single, you desperately want a boyfriend. You find a guy you really like and all you can think about is wanting freedom back and how maybe you're not ready for this commitment.
For every situation in life, there is an opposite that usually seems pretty appealing to those on the other side. Whenever you do cross to the other side of the grass, you find that it's not as great as you thought, and that maybe the original side is more your style.
People have begun circulating the quote that, rather than on the other side, the grass is always greener "where you water it." Instead of complaining and always wanting to change things, maybe we should learn to appreciate and nourish the good things we have. Appreciate how green the grass already is in your own front yard.
