To My Grandpa, Who Made Me A Cubs Fan

This win was for him!

Major League Baseball

I remember sitting on your knee when I was younger, and all of a sudden, you would reach for the remote and switch the channel. I wasn't upset because I knew what time it was.

It was time for us to watch the Cubs game together, which was something that when I was younger, I didn't know I would love as much as I love doing it today. You don't get the game on your tv anymore, which saddens me, but just sitting there talking about the Cubs, watching videos, and keeping tabs on the score still makes me happy.

I don't know if I'm more excited than the Cubs winning the World Series or you are, but I wanted it for you. I immediately wanted to call you but didn't because it was after midnight after the victory set in, and I knew you wouldn't be up.

But when I called you the next day, I called and said, "What about them Cubbies?" And you cheered the best you could over the phone. It made me very happy, because even if you couldn't watch the game, of course, you still knew.

Thank you for giving me something to bond with you over for years and years. Thank you for making me have a reason to care about sports, because if I'm honest, I'm really not that into sports. But I'll always hold on to the Cubs for you! Thank you for allowing me to celebrate the moment of them winning the World Series fully as a Cubs fan.

I celebrated for you. I wanted this for you. I started counting the days to when I could home to hug you and tell you more about how intense the game was when they won, and I still am. I'm looking forward to it, and I know you are too!

I seriously think that if I wasn't raised a Cubs fan by you, I wouldn't have had the same experience as I did with this win. I'm not as big of a fan as many people by any means, but I still have a huge reason to celebrate because of simply watching those games with you. I've seen them lose, I've seen them win. I've heard you cheer, I've heard you boo.

I cheered hard during the World Series for you, and I'm not sure if you would have appreciated it too much because it might have been hard on your hearing aids (I got loud, sorry), but I wanted this win so badly.

It's been an awesome week for Chicago fans, and for me, because I have you and the Cubs. I've had fun watching the games over the past few years with you, grandpa.

Whaddya say? Cubs are gonna win today!

Thanks for making me a Cubs fan! I'm so happy for you. This isn't my win, it's your win. Go Cubs, for you, Gramps.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
