Grandmas really are grand.

Why Your Grandmother Is Actually Your Best Friend

According to Urban Dictionary, the definition of a best friend is someone you can totally be yourself around and not give a care in the world about your actions or feelings because they won't judge you for the stupid things you may do or say. This may sound like your roommate, your lifelong friend from home or your Big or Little. However, this is actually a perfect description of your grandmother. They go by many different names: Grandma, Gran, Nana, Noni, but whatever you call her, she is a grandmother and all grandmothers possess certain talents that allow her to be your best friend, even if you don't realize it.

A day with your grandmother is something you look forward to for days.

Much like anticipating a night out at your favorite spot with your best friends, a day with Grandma is something you always can't wait for. She is just as excited as you are and always has something great planned. She always surprises you, and no day with her ever disappoints.

She never judges you for eating too much.

She definitely never judges you for eating portions meant for a lumberjack. In fact, this is because she is the one who prepares these giant portions for you. She's always ready to feed you whether you are sad, excited or not hungry at all. And if she finds out you haven't eaten all day, she channels her Liam Neeson and seeks revenge for your appetite.

She always listens to your stories.

Your grandmother has been on this earth the longest out of anyone that you know. She has experienced a multitude of events both historically and in her personal life. She is wise and can offer more advice than any of your friends can. She tells you how it is without yelling at you, because grandparents HATE yelling at their grandkids. And she really does try to keep up with what you are talking about, even if she doesn't quite understand "the lingo you kids use nowadays."

She doesn't take any crap when it comes to protecting you

.

Grandmothers are the ultimate matriarchal figure. She is pretty much Mom times two. She runs the show, and you aren't just her baby, you are her baby's baby. You are her whole world, she has been dreaming about holding her grandchild since she first became a mother. If anyone ever messes with you, call her up and she will go from sweet little old lady to the ultimate O.G. (Original Grandmother).

She Always Has What You Need

Grandma's Purse is one of the heaviest objects on earth behind an oil tanker and a blue whale. But she has everything from gum to pens to the Mona Lisa in there. A best friend is always there with anything you need whether it is a hair tie or a pint of Ben & Jerry's when you are having an emotional breakdown. But your grandmother doesn't even need to go to the store to get these necessities, she already has them!

Her house is a second home.

Like with your childhood best friend, you basically grew up at their house for countless sleepovers. This is also true with your grandmother. She always had your favorite snacks, would let you watch as much TV as you wanted, and she would tell you the same stories over and over again. Some of your best memories were made in that house, and you know that you would never trade those days for anything.

You cherish every moment with her.

If you are still lucky enough to have a grandmother in your life, cherish every moment you have with her. Grandmothers teach you how to dream, and they help point you in the right direction. Listening to you tell her a story makes her entire day, even if she can't quite hear you. Make sure you remember the little things like baking in her kitchen and long car rides on Saturday mornings. Don't count the years that have gone by, but the memories that you have made. Alright, now go call your grandmother and tell her you love her.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs.
