New York-based music festival Governors Ball released their lineup earlier this week for 2016. The event is set to take place June 3-5 and entails a wide variety of genres from rap to electronic to rock and much more. Having first begun in 2011, the summertime blowout has assembled a jam-packed schedule for its sixth anniversary. Artists who have performed at the festival in the past and are set to return for this year include Kanye West, Beck, The Strokes, Of Monsters and Men, Haim, Cold War Kids, Phantogram, Big Boi, Bloc Party, The Knocks, and Catfish and the Bottlemen. Other big names on the roster include The Killers, Death Cab For Cutie, M83, Miguel, Mat and Kim, Lord Huron, Purity Ring, Two Door Cinema Club, Action Bronson, Joey Bada$$, De La Soul, Misterwves, Vince Staples, Vic Mensa, Marian Hill, Elle King and numerous more.
Much of the hype surrounding the recent lineup reveal revolves around Kanye West's mega-anticipated album "Swish," which he has announced to be in the works via social media. He tweeted on Jan. 8, 2016: "Swish February 11 16," insinuating that the drop date is so. West's last studio album, "Yeezus," came out the week following his headlining at the 2013 Governors Ball.
The festival was given its name due to the fact that it initially was held on Governor's Island in New York City. The first time the event took place, it broke the record for the highest-attended event on the island. It was moved elsewhere to Randall's Island, New York City to accommodate due to the expected (and accurate) growth that was perceived in the Ball's future. Despite the undeniable success that it accomplished from the get-go, the festival has grown tremendously since it first took place in June of 2011. Not only has it shifted from a one-day affair to a multi-day celebration, but the popularity of the festival has developed very rapidly. Governor's Ball has earned New York a position among the most proclaimed music festivals such as California's Coachella, Tennessee's Bonnaroo, Michigan's Electric Forest, Illinois' Lollapalooza. Delaware's Firefly Music Fest, Alabama's Hangout Fest and Texas's Austin City Limits.
Tickets to the event are currently on sale, with 3-Day General Admission, 3-day VIP, and 3-day Super VIP admissions still up for grabs here.
