Alright welcome to the ultimate pokemon review guide with some secret tips and tricks to help you become the ultimate pokemon trainer and master.
1. Starter pokemon
As we have all learned we are playing with the original trio. Charmander, squirtle and bulbasaur, our childhood favorites. You are instructed on how to begin catching pokemon. Make sure to choose carefully because you'll definitely get to find and catch the other two. Once you catch your first pokemon you are then thrown off into the pokemon world to catch all of them!
Secret: So you may be wondering about Pikachu and if you will ever be able to find one. Well when deciding between the first three pokemon you can have a fourth. Before beginning this make sure you are able to move quite a distance from the trio when they pop up. Start up your game (or a new account) and get to the point of catching a starter. Instead of picking one walk away until they disappear. You will have to repeat this again when they pop up once more. On the third try of them popping up, Pikachu will actually appear and give you an opportunity to catch one instead of the others. Happy hunting!
2. Pokeballs
Good ole Pokeballs, great balls, ultimates and more. You start off with a given amount and you are able to collect more at various Pokestops. You may learn that throwing Pokeballs is a special technique that we can't figure out how Ash was able to master so quickly. Eventually you learn to master the throws and learn that there are styles of throw to earn the ultimate XP. Make sure to visit Pokestops every chance you get or you will run out of Pokeballs quickly.
Tip: With throwing Pokeballs you can hold the ball and make small circle motions to create a spin. This technique is hard to master to have it actually successfully hit the pokemon and catch it. Once mastered it is a perfect way to earn easy XP.
Secret: When you do miss the Pokemon and you are stuck watching it roll away you can actually tap the ball to regain it back in your possession. This little trick hasn't become 100 percent successful with retrieval but it is an easy way to save some bad throws.
3. Pokestops
From previous games we had to travel to a pokemart to purchase all of our potions, revives, pokeballs, berries or anything else. In Pokemon Go we now get to experience new Pokestops. Each one is located at churches, memorials, statues or signs. More have also been located at restaurants, hospitals, and fountains. They are just about everywhere in the game. But location makes a big difference of whether you will find 20+ stops or 1 every 50 miles. More rural areas seem to lack in stops compared to cities where they appear as much as gas stations, drug stores or fast food restaurants.
Tip: When attempting to access stops via a vehicle, you need to drive very slow (less than 25 mph) or come to a stop to access it long enough. Also do not forget to spin the picture to actually get the items from it. You'd be surprised at how necessary that part of the tip is! P.S. don't forget to enjoy the location they tend to be pretty and cool.
4. Gyms
Gyms are brought back with a new twist. This time around gyms are controlled by teams. Gyms will also have other Pokemon trainers there with their highest level Pokemon. The trainer with the highest will be ranked as the gym leader. Opponents can be as little as 1 and as many as 5 (or more I am not entirely sure with that). Battles are no longer in turn by turn basis. The new rules of gym battles are drastically different. Your Pokemon has only 2 moves (normal and a special type move) To battle you rapidly tap the screen in hope that you do the most damage. To use that second move you have to hold down once your bar has filled up (bar underneath health bar).
Tip: Once you reach level 5 and attempt to battle a gym, you are prompted to pick a team. Team valor, team mystic or team instinct. Each team will prompt you with a reason their team exist whether it is strength, evolution or hatching eggs. As of right now there is no purpose behind teams besides color for gym battles. Rumors of the team's purpose is to come in to play soon enough. So pick wisely! #TeamMystic
5. Eggs
Pokemon Go has brought back a stressful yet exciting part of the game known as eggs. We use to love leaving our Pokemon at the daycare to attempt to create an egg. We did everything afterwards to run around and hatch that egg. Well eggs this time around are easier to obtain. During visits of Pokestops you can require up to 9 eggs. Eggs vary in distance now. To hatch these eggs now you have to put in an incubator and walk enough to match the kilometers. 2km are usually weaker and more common Pokemon. 5km are in the middle, somewhat rare and somewhat not. 10 km are much rarer pokemon hence why they require you to travel the farthest distance.
Tip: You will have to keep the game running in the background for your steps to count. To save on battery power you can go into settings and click battery saver mode. This will put the phone in save mode when you lower your phone or turn it over. You will still receive the vibrate notification when a Pokemon appears. Battery saver mode works wonders in my opinion and has helped me from killing my phone within a few hours.
Secret: If you are looking to hatch eggs quickly and are trying to travel/walk the steps in the least amount of time you have other options than walking. Now cars seem plausible but you have to be going under 25 mph. Rumor is around 15 mph you stop clocking steps. The best way to tell is when your avatar begins to run that you are going too fast. You can get around this by skateboarding/long boarding or skating.
6. Evolution & Power Ups
Evolution has always been based on levels in prior Pokemon games. This time around levels do not exist and it is replaced by CP (combat points). When you look at the individual Pokemon's page you will see your amount of stardust and that particular Pokemon candy. Underneath that you see an option to raise the CP (power up) and evolve (if evolution is possible). Power ups require stardust and candy. Evolutions require just candy. Candy and stardust come from catching Pokemon. When attempting to evolve a Pokemon you have to catch repeated amounts of the same Pokemon. I recommend keeping 1-3 of the highest level of that particular type. Then transfer the lower levels to professor willow and he will reward you with a piece of candy. Some types will require high amounts of the candy or some will require very little. So make good decisions when catching Pokemon and transferring them!
Here are some extra tips and tricks from various Pokemon Go Facebook pages I have found! All work and are accurate to my knowledge.
