This summer I wasn't able to get an internship, and I had to at least do something to put on my resume so I looked no further than getting a job for the summer.
I have to say though, looking for jobs when you're 19 is a bit weird since it's something you've never done before and because of your age, a lot of people assume that you've already had work experience. When I started looking for jobs I literally went to the shopping mall with a bunch of my resumes printed out to give to the managers at the stores I was going to talk to, but quickly found out that I actually just have to upload my resume, and the whole application for that matter, online so that was a bust. Although, it got me talking to the managers and I got to know them a little bit, which was a good strategy.
My Aunt helped me out the most though because she sent my resume to the district manager in our area for Under Armor. I felt that that was a great fit for me because I like clothes and I like fitness so it was the perfect combo. I went in for an interview and they hired me on the spot! I was so surprised but really relieved that I actually landed something, and something that I actually liked. I was in for another surprise when I went in for job orientation.
The job training was what I expected, which was just watch some videos on safety and how they do things, which only took me about an hour and a half. After that I thought I was going to leave, but no. They sent me out to the floor of the store and had me actually start working. It was nerve-racking at first but my managers helped me throughout and showed me the ropes. I'm just thankful that they didn't put me on the cash register because I actually had no idea how to use it.
When I applied I had put my availability as "open," since this summer I literally have nothing to do so why not make money am I right? Well, I was unaware of what I was getting into. I thought since I'm just a seasonal hire that they wouldn't give me that many hours in general and totally not a lot to start since it's my first job and they already have a bunch of full-time and part-time people who work their already. I thought wrong. After my orientational shift, I had three 8 hour shifts for the next three days after that, which made me a bit nervous. I had a mid-day shift the first day, opening shift the next, and a closing shift the last, so it's safe to say. Let me just say this though, it's really not that bad. Since you're on your feet all day because it's retail, you feel time go by super fast and I'm able to break it up too with my breaks in between.
All in all, I have to say it's not bad. Working retail isn't the most interesting thing in the world, but it's good for the time being and gives me something to do. If anything, I've only worked there for less than a week and I'm already my boss's favorite so I've got that going for me.
