When I was in high school, starting a school year was always agonizing. The thought of sitting in a desk for hours straight, day after day, was not something I was looking forward to. But now, move in day is a celebration, and getting through a few school weeks doesn't sound as bad.
This past week, returning back to campus was more than just that. I was returning to my home away from home. I was returning to my sisters, and I had never been welcomed by so many open arms at once before. Last year, at this time, as a wide-eyed freshman wandering around, I was clueless about where I would belong in college. Luckily, I built up the courage to go through recruitment.
Even if you’re wary about going Greek or think you wouldn't fit in, I encourage you to at least go through the process of recruiting. Just getting out there and meeting people will help you through the madness that we call freshman year. As giddy and nervous as I was, experiencing recruitment helped me learn more about who I was and how I mesh with people. And starting my first year on the other side has shown me how far I’ve come in such a short amount of time, and I definitely thank my sisters for that.
With classes starting this week, I'm honestly not too worried. I guess you could say I'm excited. A new year means new memories! Memories of struggling to get through class and texting your sisters about how boring your teacher is, and late nights in the library goofing off when you could have been done with your work hours ago. Because of my sisters, walking around campus is always fun. You can't walk down the street without running into at least one sister, and there's always comfort in seeing a familiar face. Running into girls randomly during the day is one of my favorite parts of being on campus. It's like a game, trying to spot sisters in the sea of college students. I still always manage to find them.
This new year is filled with potential for unforgettable memories and amazing opportunities. With my sisters by my side, I have the confidence to face this year head on and with a smile.
