As I watched the "2016 XXL Freshmen Cypher" on Youtube, there was one rapper who stood out to me more than Lil Uzi Vert or Lil Yachty. That rapper goes by the name of Denzel Curry. After the video concluded, I immediately searched for his music and I was glad I got to learn more about him.
Denzel Curry is a a Florida native who has been writing music even since he was 12. The uniqueness about Curry is his style which contains Memphis beats with some 90's hip hop. Curry tried to look for interest in what he wanted to embrace, but hip hop became his number one priority and he started creating music at 16. With his hard work of creativity and sleepless nights, he made three mix tapes and had one of his songs heard through BBC Radio. In 2012, Curry signed with Loma Vista records. Shortly after signing with the label, Curry made his debut performance at Coachella with the Raider Klan.
With Loma Vista Records, he was able to drop his first successful album in 2013 titled "Nostalgic 64." Two years later, he came out with the "32 Zel/ Planet Shrooms EP."
His latest album was dropped last year called "Imperial," which includes songs such as "Gook," "Knotty Head" and "Zenith." The album also includes collaborations with well known rap artists such as Joey Bada$$ in "Zenith" and Rick Ross in "Knotty Head."
With Curry's unique style, he is hoping to keep southern hip hop alive and well. He is also hoping to have his voice heard as most of his songs document society today. A good example is "Zenith" which portrays how people are distracted with advanced technology and have no mind of thinking clearly. The music video shows two rooms with people acting paralyzed and misdirected. Here is the video to check out.
