We all love to receive a nice pat on the back every once in awhile. Whether you are the most confident person in the world or you constantly struggle with your self-esteem, positive reinforcement can go a long way. When we are appreciated, we like to hear it. When we are doing a good job, we would like to know it. As much as we all love to receive compliments, however, they can be just as rewarding to give as to receive. It is scientifically proven that expressing your gratitude can improve your mood. In my opinion, you can improve your mood even more be giving considerate compliments. Leave behind the typical "you're pretty" or "you're nice" compliments and dig a little deeper. Give thought-provoking and meaningful compliments. Here are some true compliments that will brighten anyone's day. If one of these reminds you of someone in your life, let them know.
1. "I appreciate you."
We have so much to be thankful for in life and the people who are in ours are definitely at the top of the list. I have many friends who I appreciate very much for what they add to my life. Were I to not express this appreciation, I would be doing myself and my friends a disservice.
2. "You are a great listener."
This is a rare quality in today's world. Someone who not only puts down their phone and is able to truly connect with you, but who also listens to what you are saying and feeling before offering input, is a true gem in life. Let these people know how important they are.
3. "You have made a difference in my life."
Whether it is the friend who encouraged you to go for your big goal and leave your comfort zone or someone who gave you a dose of positivity or a reality check right when you needed it, all of us have people who have made a difference in our lives. So, tell them. I'm sure that they would love to hear it.
4. "You are talented."
Each person is uniquely gifted with their own set of talents and strengths. So, notice those strengths in others and point them out. Many people can get discouraged when they don't feel like their talents are in line with what is conventionally praised, so you should reach out and offer a bit of unique encouragement. Do you have a friend who is a great creative thinker? Tell them. Do you know someone who is excellent at organization and making plans? Let them know.
5. "You are intelligent."
In a society that continually praises outward beauty, an intellectual compliment can go a long way. Let those in your life be recognized by you for their competence, not their appearance.
6. "You are important to me."
Sometimes, this is all that we need to hear. If someone is important to you, tell them. You may not know how much they need to hear it.
