Dear Sonny Lubick Field at Hughes Stadium,
I want to thank you on the behave of past and present students of Colorado State University. You have provided many memories for us, some recent and some dating back to the first original games in 1968. You have provided 262 games including Rocky Mountain Showdowns, Boarder Wars, AG Days and many others. We hate to see your retirement, but we will all treasure the memories made with you.
Thank you for the history you represent for CSU. Starting with your name, named after two great CSU coaches Harry Hughes and Sonny Lubick. You are located underneath the painted white A on the foothills near Horsetooth Reservoir, which stands for Aggies, when CSU was once Colorado A&M. You were one of the first stadiums to allow alcohol to be served during games, which was huge in 1975. Thank you for your cannon, handled by the Army ROTC. You scare the crap out of most people when it goes off, but it brings excitement to all. It signifies kickoff and a Ram's touchdown. Thank you for your beauty and uniqueness. Thank you for having huge parking lots, perfect for Ram fans to tailgate before games. Where myself and many others have spent hours before kickoff enjoying hot-dogs, corn-hole and cold beverages.
Thank you for the memories you personally have provided for me. Starting with my first game, it was AG Day against Savannah State. Other freshmen and I walked through your tunnel and made a runway for the players to go through before kickoff. Plus we demolished Savannah State that game to make it even better. Then, I snuck onto the field with my friends after an early morning hike to the A. (Which I somehow suspect is something we won't get away with at the new stadium.) Ending with the last game ever against the New Mexico Lobos, it was the coldest game I had attended. It required a 4 hour tailgate before kickoff at 8:15, which only made it colder. An ending score of 49-31 against the Lobos resulted in students and fans to storm the field to celebrate the win.
We will miss: Your parking lots for tailgating. Your walls that were easy to climb. Your beauty. Your history. All of the memories we made cheering on our rams.
With Love,
The Ramily
