As I seek to develop independence and achieve academic success, I plan on developing study strategies that will utilize me to become a better student. The current study strategies that I use and want to improve are: taking better precise notes, setting aside a quiet study place that will help me stay focused, and probably my most important one, is to not procrastinate until the last minute to get assignments done.
Every class I’m taking this semester follows different curriculums. So to stay on top of assignments and have good study habits, I color code my notes. Since my classes differ from each other, color coding everything helps me to stay well organized. I plan on keeping this good study habit, as well as writing better notes by writing less and sticking solely to the main points of the topic.
Setting aside a quiet study area for myself has probably benefited me the most. I used to study in my dorm room and found out that I had too many distractions. It kept me away from studying like I should have been. By finding a quiet place to study, I have been able to improve my homework and quiz scores. I believe that students who struggle with studying in their dorm would benefit a lot from studying at the library, or even outside somewhere that is suitable to their needs.
Procrastinating used to be a problem back in high school, and because of that, my grades suffered. So coming into college, I decided to use different techniques to help myself. One way I keep track of the assignments I need to get done is by having a calendar next to my bed and writing down the assignments that are due on a specific day. This helps me to stay alert and know what needs to be done immediately and what can wait to do at a later time or day.
Study strategies do not only make you more independent and achieve academic success, but they can eliminate a lot of stress and boost your self-confidence. After being in college for almost a month, I have developed a lot of academic skills that I never thought would work to become a better student.
