We Had A Good Run

Writing for The Odyssey was a blast, and hopefully this goodbye is temporary.

We Had A Good Run
Bradford Douglas

When I was in elementary school, I played little league baseball for two consecutive summers, but I wasn’t talented in that field and lost interest so I stopped.

When I was in middle school, I took karate lessons for about a year then became overwhelmed with my schedule and so I stopped. In high school, I was an active member of the ecology club for about a year and a half, but then I either had to work or wanted to go home on Fridays after school so I stopped.

The summer after my freshman year at The Ohio State University, a friend of mine talked me into joining the Odyssey writing staff. I had plenty of free time and was chockfull of opinions that nobody asked for, so I dived in. My first article about racism gave me with a much-needed outlet and proved to be quite popular with my friends and family. Since then I’ve written about politics, entertainment, and my personal life among other things.

Thus far my most popular articles have been “Yes, Racism Still Exists in 2017”, “Why Saving Private Ryan is Better Than Dunkirk”, and “Is The Alleged Marginalization of Trump Voters Really A Bad Thing?”.

I’m proud of these articles as I am my entire body of work. This is why it pains me to say that I will be leaving Ohio State’s Odyssey staff… for now. I can’t promise a time frame for when I’ll return or if I’ll return at all, but I’m afraid my other commitments have caught up with me and I needed to make time somewhere.

Creating quality content that I’m passionate about and that I feel others will find interesting has become increasingly difficult and unfortunately, for the time being, writing for The Odyssey must go the way of baseball, karate, and ecology club. I had a great time writing with the other members of the staff, and I wish everyone the best. I appreciate The Odyssey offering me and other students a free speech platform and I appreciate anyone who’s ever taken the time to read my work. Hopefully, it made you consider new ideas, watch something you wouldn’t otherwise have, or feel represented to some degree.

We had a good run, Odyssey at OSU. Maybe we’ll have another one down the line. But for now, thank you, good luck to everyone involved, and see you around!

I've been super busy lately with school work, studying, etc. Besides the fact that I do nothing but AP chemistry and AP economics, I constantly think of stupid questions that are almost impossible to answer. So, maybe you could answer them for me, and if not then we can both wonder what the answers to these 15 questions could be.

From sea to shining sea, the United States was uniquely positioned for an incredible Aurora Borealis display on Thursday, Oct. 10, 2024, going into Friday, Oct. 11.

It was the second time this year after an historic geomagnetic storm in May 2024. Those Northern Lights were visible in Europe and North America, just like this latest rendition.

To My Loving Boyfriend,

  • Thank you for all that you do for me
  • Thank you for working through disagreements with me
  • Thank you for always supporting me
  • I appreciate you more than words can express
  • You have helped me grow and become a better person
  • I can't wait to see where life takes us next
  • I promise to cherish every moment with you
  • Thank you for being my best friend and confidante
  • I love you and everything you do

To start off, here's something I don't say nearly enough: thank you. Thank you, thank you, thank you from the bottom of my heart. You do so much for me that I can't even put into words how much I appreciate everything you do - and have done - for me over the course of our relationship so far. While every couple has their fair share of tiffs and disagreements, thank you for getting through all of them with me and making us a better couple at the other end. With any argument, we don't just throw in the towel and say we're done, but we work towards a solution that puts us in a greater place each day. Thank you for always working with me and never giving up on us.

Because no one ever really leaves.

Ah, yes, good old Hauppauge. We are that town in the dead center of Long Island that barely anyone knows how to pronounce unless they're from the town itself or live in a nearby area. Hauppauge is home to people of all kinds. We always have new families joining the community but honestly, the majority of the town is filled with people who never leave (high school alumni) and elders who have raised their kids here. Around the town, there are some just some landmarks and places that only the people of Hauppauge will ever understand the importance or even the annoyance of.
