Going into college may be the first time a few people have had the experience of sharing a tiny space with another person... Here are a few different ways to be the best roommate possible for however many years you're in a dorm room.
Consideration
Being considerate could probably cover all of the following tips because it is a good, broad snapshot of what a good roommate is. Taking into consideration both the interests of yourself and the interests of your roommate(s) is always a good first step when making a big room decision. Always check with whomever the stakeholders in the decision are before giving the go-ahead. Coordinating schedules is important as well. Know each other's class schedules and social tendencies to get a feel for certain planning.
Cleanliness
This one is huge for me because I'm the cleanest person alive. There are two ways to help keep a tidy space: cleanliness and organization. In this case, cleanliness is just physically cleaning up common areas such as any living area, kitchen, etc. Organization is having everything where anyone can find it in a neat and orderly fashion. Don't be dirty. It's a quick way to be a terrible roommate.
Limit the Stuff
Have a feel for the amount of space that you will be sharing and with how many people you will be sharing it with. Don't bring too much stuff or duplicate stuff. You only need one microwave.
Utilize the Relationship
Don't be the guy/girl that ignores the fact that you LIVE with each other. Utilize each other for your strengths, especially when it comes to school. Get to know each other and help each other tackle life together, you won't regret it.
