Dear future teachers of America,
As of February 7, 2017, Elisabeth Dee “Betsy” DeVos was sworn in as our Secretary of Education.
Who is Betsy DeVos?
DeVos was born in Holland, Michigan, on January 8, 1958. DeVos went to Holland Christian High School and Calvin College. She earned her bachelor's degree in business administration and political science. DeVos is a member of the Republican Party.
What are her responsibilities as Secretary of Education?
DeVos is the head of the U.S. Department of Education. She is a member of the President Trumps Cabinet and if something happens to President Trump, she is fifteenth in the line of succession. As secretary, DeVos’s, duty is to overlook the direction, supervision, and coordination of all the movements in the Department of Education. DeVos is now President Trumps adviser on Federal policies, programs and activities related to education in the United States.
What happens now that Betsy DeVos is Secretary of Education?
You continue studying to be a teacher. You continue to love teaching.
What doesn’t change?
Your love for teaching!
Future teachers of America, I was sitting in class and I heard a student behind me say, “I don’t want to go into education anymore because of Betsy DeVos.” “WHAT?!” I thought to myself as I ripped my hair out; you don’t want to teach because of someone else?
There are so many people who tell me not go into education (if I had a dollar for every time I heard that I would be making the salary a teacher deserves) but I’m going into education for the kids. I want to shape young minds in order to create a better world, and I do not need Betsy DeVos for that.
I am going to make a difference in my students' lives and I will do that regardless of who is Secretary of Education. If you don't agree with her opinions, then teach in spite of Betsy DeVos. If teaching is your goal, then you should do it no matter what someone else's politics are.
A fellow future teacher of America.
