I always loved Halloween as a kid. The memory of filling up multiple pillow cases full of candy is something I will never forget. We kids all went out as a large group, to trick or treat around the neighborhood, while our parents came to help us lug around all the candy. I still like Halloween, even now, don't get me wrong, but it is not as spirited to me as it used to be. I don't go out on October 31st anymore, and I've noticed not many other people around where I live do either. One thing that I will always love about this time of year, though, is the movies. I think Halloween is one of the best times of the year for movies, whether its horror related or those silly spooky movies you can watch with kids. Here is a list of my top 10 Halloween related films that I think everybody has to see at least once...
1. Hocus Pocus
This movie is one of the best things about the 13 Nights of Halloween special that ABC Family (Freeform) has on TV every year. I always find this one to be enjoyable to watch, even after watching it multiple times every year!
2. The Shining
Stephen King is one of the best authors, in my opinion. He always leaves you wanting more, especially in the story of The Shining. The movie adaptation is also fantastic. Jack Nicholson brought the character of Jack Torrance to life perfectly, and he is truly a one of a kind actor.
3. The Goonies
Admittedly, I only started appreciating this movie a couple of years ago and I had never read any of The Goonies books. This movie has grown on me, though, and I think I may start reading the books now that I enjoy the storyline. Better late than never!
4. House on Haunted Hill
This is the 1999 film. I had never seen the original, which starred Vincent Price in 1959. This one, though, drew me in from the very first time I had seen it. Not only do I think the plot has some unique twists, but the cast is wonderful. Geoffrey Rush is amazing in every movie I had seen him in, this one being one of them.
5. Young Frankenstein
I had to include this one. If it weren't for a film class that I had taken in high school, I probably would have never watched this movie. I never heard of Young Frankenstein until a couple of years ago. Now, it is in my list of my top favorite movies ever! Gene Wilder is brilliantly hilarious. If you are looking for a more comical option, or if you just need a pick-me-up, this is the movie for you!
6. Corpse Bride
You can never go wrong with a Tim Burton film, in my opinion. But, around this time of year, I feel like everyone obsesses over The Nightmare Before Christmas. I do love that movie, don't get me wrong, but I enjoy Corpse Bride so much more. The story is so sweet but sad at the same time. Tim Burton's artistic style paints a perfect contrast between the world of the living and the world of the dead.
7. Halloweentown
I used to watch this film all of the time as a kid. I haven't seen it in a few years, but it is still one of my favorites. If you have kids, or are just a kid at heart, this movie is perfect. If Disney Channel still plays this movie around this time of year, you need to give it a chance!
8. Psycho
Here's a classic. This is such a brilliant movie, and is even still a bit creepy today, despite being made so many years ago. I only saw this movie once, a couple of years ago, but I want to watch it again and again and again. I feel like so many people don't even need to see the movie to know the storyline of Norman Bates, but trust me, you will not regret watching this if you haven't seen it already!
9. The Sixth Sense
The ending of this movie made me cry. Why? If you haven't seen it, I can't tell you. But if you have seen this movie, you should probably guess exactly why. I feel like this film is another favorite, among so many people and with good reason. Though it isn't exactly scary, in my opinion, the plotline is still perfect. Its a story that makes you really think and when it comes to movies, who doesn't love that?
10. Halloween
And, last but certainly not least, Halloween. I mean the holiday is in the title, so I couldn't NOT mention it. But I'm mentioning it for other reasons as well. I feel like Michael Myers is a character that will withstand the test of time. Even if you haven't seen this movie, you probably know about this famous character and how he appears when least expected. This movie is truly a work of art.
So that is it, ladies and gents! I hope you can be inspired to watch at least one of these movies on Halloween. You can certainly watch these all year 'round, though! Have a happy and safe Halloween and try not to eat too much candy in one sitting! Though, I know, that can be easier said than done sometimes...
