Going Out Of Your Comfort Zone

It can be absolutely terrifying - but it's almost always worth it.

Going Out Of Your Comfort Zone

Trying new things, especially things that might scare you, can be a daunting task, no matter how big or small the new thing may be. Maybe you're trying to decide on where to go to college and are considering going somewhere where you know absolutely nobody. Maybe you're recently single and are deciding to test the waters again. Or maybe you're deciding to try a new style. Whatever it is, going out of your comfort zone is almost always worth it. Here's why.

I struggle with anxiety, so I know what it's like to worry about new things. Believe me, it can happen on the daily. I may have trouble with doing something as simple as sending a text to someone I haven't spoken to in a while for fear they may not remember me. It happens to all of us in varying degrees - whether you have anxiety or not - I can promise you that. This year in college was extremely transformative for me. I am a music major, and I am studying to become a music teacher and eventually a conductor. I took some classes this year that made me face my biggest fear - individual performance. Here's the thing — I didn't have to take those classes at all. I knew what I was getting into when I registered at the beginning of each semester, and I worried quite literally every single day about the final exams for each. It was really difficult to relax as the exams approach, but I knew that the experience would be good for me. Long story short, I was eventually able to just push myself to step out of my comfort zone and delve into the fear. I could not be happier that I did. I gained so much educational and personal experience from doing so, and I would not be able to say that had I not psyched myself up to face my fear.

I know it's not easy. In fact, it may be the hardest thing you ever do. I truly urge you to try to step outside of your comfort zone from time to time, no matter how big or small the task at hand is. You probably hear advice like that all the time from your parents, teachers, etc., but from one millennial to another, I can promise you they're right.

Bob's Burgers
Adult Swim

Bob's Burgers is arguably one of the best and most well-written shows on tv today. That, and it's just plain hilarious. From Louise's crazy antics to Tina's deadpan self-confidence, whether they are planning ways to take over school or craft better burgers, the Belchers know how to have fun. They may not be anywhere close to organized or put together, but they do offer up some wise words once and awhile.

We're in college, none of us actually have anything together. In fact, not having anything together is one of our biggest stressors. However, there's a few little things that we do ever so often that actually make us feel like we have our lives together.

1. Making yourself dinner

And no this does not include ramen or Annie's Mac & Cheese. Making a decent meal for yourself is one of the most adult things you can do living on campus. And the food is much better than it would be at the dining hall.

I think the hardest thing about going away to college is figuring out how to become an adult. Leaving a household where your parents took care of literally everything (thanks, Mom!) and suddenly becoming your own boss is overwhelming. I feel like I'm doing a pretty good job of being a grown-up, but once in awhile I do something that really makes me feel like I'm #adulting. Twenty-somethings know what I'm talking about.

I went to a small high school, like 120-people-in-my-graduating-class small. It definitely had some good and some bad, and if you also went to a small high school, I’m sure you’ll relate to the things that I went through.

1. If something happens, everyone knows about it

Who hooked up with whom at the party? Yeah, heard about that an hour after it happened. You failed a test? Sorry, saw on Twitter last period. Facebook fight or, God forbid, real fight? It was on half the class’ Snapchat story half an hour ago. No matter what you do, someone will know about it.

Chandler Bing

I'm assuming that we've all heard of the hit 90's TV series, Friends, right? Who hasn't? Admittedly, I had pretty low expectations when I first started binge watching the show on Netflix, but I quickly became addicted.

Without a doubt, Chandler Bing is the most relatable character, and there isn't an episode where I don't find myself thinking, Yup, Iam definitely the Chandler of my friend group.
