I started college three years ago and when I walked onto that campus I had no idea what I wanted to do with my college career. I saw a lot of people around me already being involved in activities, knowing what their future lives were going to hold for them and I was just there worrying that I was going to be far behind everybody else because I didn't know what I wanted to do. But through the years I learned that me not knowing it at first was absolutely okay.
I've had people pressure me into declaring when I first started and I was completely shocked. I thought I was screwed and that college was going to be the worst experience ever because of it. A lot of these people had already decided what their entire future will be like and I was just there going through the motions.
My advice for other people who are undeclared is to test the waters. Get involved in some activities and take classes that you think you may be interested in and go from there. You may not keep your first major and that is absolutely okay. When I finally declared my second semester, I knew that I wanted to go into something writing related so I went into journalism. This has allowed me to branch into other activities such as the school newspaper which I've been at for over a year now and it has been a blast. I've learned so much through working through the school newspaper that I didn't expect to learn back when I was an undeclared freshman.
Opportunities will arise for students who take initiative and just try their best regardless of what they want to do. Once you enter college there is no rush for you to decide right away because college is stressful enough and having to worry about a major that will depict your future is way too stressful for anybody.
To anybody who took the time to read this just know that you are okay. Your time to decide will come but don't rush it. College is supposed to be an enjoying experience so allow yourself to enjoy it.
