Going Home For Christmas According To The Grinch

The Christmas season is finally here and you are overjoyed.

You get to go home and see your family pet. And maybe dress it up.

You can decorate as excessively as you want and nobody can tell you otherwise.

But there is definitely a range of emotions you will encounter when you go home.

Like when your annoying relatives come to visit and you have to hang out with them.

Or when you have to get ready for a Christmas party.

Your little cousin tells you that he doesn't think Santa Claus is real.

Only to be given this look when you promise your cousin that Santa Claus is real and he needs to enjoy his childhood while he can.

Your dad shows up for the Christmas card picture looking ridiculous.

You hope nobody comments on the weight you've gained while you were at school.

You try to fall asleep at night, but aren't able to get a Christmas song out of your head.

You get into your car after you just ate your weight in Christmas cookies.

Your mom tries to put you in that sweater your great aunt gave you four years ago.

You see your high school ex around your hometown and don't know how to act.

You attempt to find parking at the mall so you don't have to walk a mile just to buy Christmas presents.

You find the perfect outfit for your neighbor's Christmas party.

And you feel so fabulous.

You try to maintain somewhat of a workout schedule over break so you don't look like you ate the whole roast beast when you go back to school.

You finally emerge from the Netflix binge in your room because your mom is making you go somewhere.

You make up excuses so you don't have to hang out with people you were only kind of friends with in high school.

And you beg your dog to sit still so you can post a festive pic on Instagram.

You dread the moment your entire family decides to share embarrassing stories about you.

You trying (and fail) to find the perfect presents for your family members.

You're finally old enough to drink at all the Christmas parties you have to go to.

You wonder what you're supposed to do for a month back in your hometown without any real responsibilities.

You realize it's suddenly Christmas Eve and you are not prepared to stop wearing red and green everywhere.

But you always remembering what the true meaning of Christmas really is.

Just kidding.

When I was learning how to talk, I was taught both Portuguese and English at the same time. In elementary school, I started taking mandatory Spanish classes, which I did well in because of my knowledge of Portuguese. Then in high school, on top of taking Spanish, I also started taking French. Now, in college, already fluent in English and Portuguese, I'm in the process of becoming fluent in Spanish, and I have a standard high school level understanding of French.

I am without a doubt one of those people who refuses to start decorating for Christmas or listen to Christmas music until after Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, Thanksgiving has become an underrated holiday over the years. You barely see any Thanksgiving decorations in stores; it's like they skip right from Halloween to Christmas.
