Every year, thousands of girls across the country all dress up an exhaust themselves for the sake of going Greek. This time a year ago, I was very against joining a sorority. I refused to see past the stereotypes and said I didn't need to pay for my friends. One year later and here I am, a proud sister of Delta Zeta. Lately, I've been thinking about how I am not the same person I was a year ago. Many critics of sororities say that it can change a person, and they're right. Here is how going Greek changed me.
1. I am more confident
Before I joined Greek life, I didn't talk to people I didn't know. I kept to myself and would shy away from social interaction. I was afraid to be unapologetically me. Once I joined and was surrounded by girls who did nothing but uplift me and encourage me to be myself, that definitely changed.
2. I have more friends
I'm sure you're thinking that I only have more friends because I "paid for them." While I do have all of my sisters as friends, the confidence I have gained has helped me to talk to more people. I have friends in my classes, other Greek organizations and everywhere in between. It's crazy how simply talking to someone can form a bond.
3. I am more involved
Once I joined Greek life, I felt more comfortable going out and trying new things at school. A year ago, if you would've told me I would be not only in a sorority but also be a freshman mentor and writing for Odyssey, I would've said you were crazy. Now I do all of those things and love them with my whole heart! Yes, you can get involved and not be in a sorority but it definitely gave me the confidence to go for it.
4. I am more outgoing
I'm pretty much willing to try anything that life has to offer now. I know I have a support system of sisters who will encourage me to go after my dreams and will help me when everything doesn't go as planned.
5. I am happier
While sitting in my room all the time was fun for a little bit, eventually, I felt stuck and like I didn't really have a place at my school. Going Greek gave me a place and a purpose at my school. I am happier and feel like my school is truly my home.
6. I understand sororities
They say that from the outside looking in, you can't understand it and from the inside looking out, you can't explain it. Although cheesy, that reigns true. You may see a group of girls "paying for their friends" and a reason to party; however, I see a support system of sisters who pays so that they can help their philanthropy, support sisters across the nation and of course have some fun. Going Greek definitely changed me, but it was most certainly for the better.
