Advice To Those Going From High School To College

As summer is approaching many high school students are already out for the year, and they have already chosen where they will be attending college in the fall if they choose to do so. For many of them this is an exciting time and a chance to continue on with their education and to get even more involved. For some it’s a chance to kind of re-invent themselves and walk in with a more developed sense of who they are as an individual, and for other's it’s so nerve wrecking that they couldn’t possibly bear the thought of moving away.

It’s scary to many to leave their lifelong friends behind, their home town, and everything they’re familiar with to move to a new place where they most likely don’t know anyone and have no idea what goes on in this new place they’ll call home. They will have to go through the process of making friends all over again, they’ll have to find activities and clubs to join that may interest them. Most of all, they'll learn to study in different ways and use the tools around them in order to help them excel in these higher education classes.

Going in to my senior year in the fall at Bridgewater State University, the best advice that I can offer incoming freshman is to get involved as much as possible, use all the tools around you to help you to succeed, and surround yourself with a group of friends that act as a support system and also have the same goals as you. Pay attention to the student announcements and attend at least one meeting for a club you may be interested in joining. Don’t be afraid to just walk right in and explore the new opportunity, and see what it’s all about. No matter which university or college you will be attending, there is bound to be something that you like. Whether it’s a club you were a part of in high school or a new one that you have an interest in joining, Being a part of a club is a great way to connect with others and make friends with people who have the same interests as you, and could potentially be majoring in the same field you are.

One of the most important things that I can tell you that I have learned over the years is to surround yourself with people who will bring a positive light to your life and will support to whenever and no matter what. Choose friends who want to excel and put in the time to succeed just like you do. Don't forget to have fun while you're at college though. Yes, the main purpose for your being there is to work hard and receive that degree, but those 4 years will fly by before you know it, and you don't want to have any regrets. If you want to go to the party, go to the party, if you want to check out that new club, go and check it out. Don't be afraid of the adventure that lies ahead of you. Before you know it, those 4 years will be up and you'll be walking across the stage ready to receive your diploma.

Summer: a time (usually) free from school work and a time to relax with your friends and family. Maybe you go on a vacation or maybe you work all summer, but the time off really does help. When you're in college you become super close with so many people it's hard to think that you won't see many of them for three months. But, then you get that text saying, "Hey, clear your schedule next weekend, I'm coming up" and you begin to flip out. Here are the emotions you go through as your best friend makes her trip to your house.

Syllabus Week As Told By Kourtney Kardashian

Feeling Lost During Syllabus Week? You're Not Alone!

Kourtney Kardashian

Winter break is over, we're all back at our respective colleges, and the first week of classes is underway. This is a little bit how that week tends to go.

The professor starts to go over something more than the syllabus

You get homework assigned on the first day of class

There are multiple group projects on the syllabus

You learn attendance is mandatory and will be taken every class

Professor starts chatting about their personal life and what inspired them to teach this class

Participation is mandatory and you have to play "icebreaker games"

Everybody is going out because its 'syllabus week' but you're laying in bed watching Grey's Anatomy

Looking outside anytime past 8 PM every night of this week

Nobody actually has any idea what's happening this entire week

Syllabus week is over and you realize you actually have to try now...or not

Now it's time to get back into the REAL swing of things. Second semester is really here and we all have to deal with it.

panera bread

Whether you specialized in ringing people up or preparing the food, if you worked at Panera Bread it holds a special place in your heart. Here are some signs that you worked at Panera in high school.

1. You own so many pairs of khaki pants you don’t even know what to do with them

Definitely the worst part about working at Panera was the uniform and having someone cute come in. Please don’t look at me in my hat.

7 Ways to Make Your Language More Transgender and Nonbinary Inclusive

With more people becoming aware of transgender and non-binary people, there have been a lot of questions circulating online and elsewhere about how to be more inclusive. Language is very important in making a space safer for trans and non-binary individuals. With language, there is an established and built-in measure of whether a place could be safe or unsafe. If the wrong language is used, the place is unsafe and shows a lack of education on trans and non-binary issues. With the right language and education, there can be more safe spaces for trans and non-binary people to exist without feeling the need to hide their identities or feel threatened for merely existing.
