Going Bananas

The Best Fruit Known to Humans Everywhere

Going Bananas

There is some controversy about bananas. Some people believe they are the most delicious fruit, while others are repulsed by them. Throughout my life span, I have had different opinions about bananas. My taste buds just couldn’t decide whether they enjoyed them or not. As of now though, bananas are undoubtedly my favorite fruit. There are many reasons why I believe bananas are the best fruit in the world. And it’s not just because of their taste… though I love it regardless. It’s because this fruit is versatile, it has many uses, it can be prepared in so many ways, and the health benefits are exceeding.

Bananas are packed with vitamins: seven to be exact. Among the seven are potassium, vitamin B6, vitamin C, magnesium, copper, manganese, and fiber. The most familiar vitamins to you may be vitamin C, potassium, and fiber. Vitamin C strengthens your immune system, potassium is crucial to regulating fluid and controlling electrolytes. And fiber is beneficial for your digestive system.

Now you know the many health benefits, you may be willing to try bananas in the several ways I will suggest to you.

A great way to utilize bananas is to freeze them, and make “nana” ice cream (it’s dairy free ice cream using frozen bananas as the “custard”). The consistency is very close to actual ice cream and it tastes amazing. It’s also really good for you. You can also make banana smoothies with frozen bananas too. And adding other fruits makes it taste even better. I like to add water, strawberries, blueberries, vanilla protein powder, chia seeds and honey to my smoothie; it really tastes just like a dessert.

Another way you can use bananas is to put it on any bread you can find. I love putting bananas on toast, bagels, rice cakes, even challah bread. Bananas taste best with peanut butter or Nutella, so using those as spreads is the best way to go.

Bananas can also be a wonderful, and simple dessert! Add chocolate (milk or dark, melted or hardened) to your banana and it’ll probably be one of the healthiest desserts you’ve ever tried.

Even alcoholic beverages utilize bananas for their taste and consistency.

And you think we’re done… but there’s more. Bananas are also a very tasty snack and can be eaten/prepped in two popular ways; some people fry them to make plantains (which are equivalent to your average potato chip, but tastes better and is healthier). And if you do not prefer plantains, peel the banana and eat it straight up. Your body will thank you.

The only way to perfect a fruit salad is to add sliced bananas with chopped almonds and honey on top. As you can tell, pretty much anything tastes good with bananas.

Lastly, bananas are commonly used in many desserts, such as ice cream (the infamous Ben and Jerry’s Chunky Monkey), banana cream pie, banana pudding, banana bread, banana splits, banana foster, and so many more that I’m sure you can research and try in your very own kitchen!

The BEST fact about bananas is that everyone can eat them! No matter if you’re vegan, vegetarian, carnivore or an omnivore, bananas are edible to everyone! And animals enjoy them too. They seriously are the most versatile and obtainable fruit known to man (plus, they’re also very cheap), so stack up guys, because you will go bananas for this fruit.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
