We live in a fallen world full of fallen people. Failure isn’t abnormal in our lives. Whether it’s us, those around us, or someone on TV, we’re used to failure. That’s why we’re often skeptical of something that is claimed never to fail. We’ve all seen the infomercials for the latest flashlight or kitchen device that will “never fail,” and we usually change the channel as soon as possible. But, if God says something will never fail, we can believe it.
First Corinthians 13:8 boldly states, “Love never fails” (NKJ). Given our experiences with broken relationships, broken homes, and broken promises, this can be a hard statement to believe. But when love is as it is described in the context of First Corinthians 13:8, it will never fail. It was God’s love for us that brought his infallible plan to fruition: the death of His Son for the forgiveness of our sins and the redemption of our souls (John 3:16; Ephesians 1:4-10).
God’s love for us never will fail. It will endure forever (1 Corinthians 13:7, 13). With such a love offered to us by God, we must be seek to cherish and honor that love: “But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life” (20-21 ESV). As our reaction to the grace of God, let us strive to keep ourselves within his love. As a reaction to the great, unfailing love of God, let us love him back earnestly, remembering that, “for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose” (Romans 8:28 ESV).
