It's A God Thing

It's not always the alignment of your weekly horoscope...

Do you ever have moments in your life that seem unexplainably good? Like, something connects, something clicks, a lightbulb goes off. Something that you might call luck or fate, or coincidence happens, and it's indescribably amazing. You might say that something "fell into place," or the "stars aligned" or something adorably cheesy like that. I say it's a God Thing.

I'm not a believer in the universe magically aligning our destinies and giving all the credit to fate. There are times in our lives that are undeniably perfectly timed. Although never explicitly stated in the Bible that "everything happens for a reason," there are things that occur that can only be explained by the power of the almighty God.

God Things: they happen.

We've all heard Jeremiah 29:11, which says, "'For I know the plans I have for you,' declares the Lord, 'plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.'" But have we ever actually looked this verse and considered it? God knows the plans He has for us. A plan is not by chance. When you make plans for something, you are making something concrete. An architect's blueprinted plans are not subject to random changes. They're plans. Similarly, God doesn't make a general sketch and leave it floating around; He makes a plan. He has a plan for your life, and He knows exactly how things will go. He also makes sure that your plan involves blessings. You are going to be given hope and joy, no matter your current situation. Hope in Christ, and joy in salvation.

Ephesians 2:10 says that, "...we are God’s handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do." God knows what we're going to go through in life, and he's got it all under control. When something goes unexplainably right, God has put that moment there for a reason. He knows that you're going to have to do some things you don't want to do. But He also knows just when you need reassurance of His presence. God Things are truly amazing.

I've had several God Things happen to me, the most memorable being the move into a new town in my freshman year of high school. I didn't see it at first, but it turned out for my benefit. I hadn't been growing in my faith, and I needed a wake up call. So God took me and moved me away from the place I called home. I was in a new town, a new church, a new atmosphere, and I was very uncomfortable. It was only later on that I realized it was a God Thing. I moved at the perfect time; I was able to begin growing my faith stronger than ever by being placed into a situation where I new nobody. I was placed there to become a stronger Christian, and to become a woman that mirrors Christ. I'm still working toward that goal obviously, and I am nowhere near perfect, but had I stayed in my mentality that I was living in, and not met the people I met, I never would have had the opportunity to grow like I have. God Things sometimes take time to comprehend. They're not always miracles that smack you in the face.

God has a strange way of working. Maybe you're sitting there thinking, "God hasn't been there for me when I needed something." Maybe you prayed really hard for something and it didn't go your way. If you ever think thoughts like this, have you ever stopped to consider that the things you don't receive may be God Things too? The person you really wanted to date may actually have been someone who would have been detrimental to your spiritual well being. The plans that fell through may actually open up another door for you in the future. Not all blessings come in the form of answered prayers.

Next time you want to blame something on pure luck or chance or perfectly aligned planets that match your weekly horoscope... pause. You might have just witnessed a God Thing. Give the credit to the One to whom it is due. There's a chance that you may not realize that the event in your life is a God Thing. You may dismiss it as an unanswered prayer or a meaningless coincidence. I encourage you to think about some of the events that have happened to you in the past, and see how they have turned out for the better. Where can you see God? How can you glorify God through those situations?

Not everything is fate, and not everything is chance. Sometimes, you've just got to sit back and acknowledge:

It's a God Thing.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
