Honestly, Bus Drivers don't get as much recognition as they should. They drive the same route, multiple times a day. That in itself probably bores them out of their minds AND they have to deal with tons of people that might not always be the nicest. Well, I have got a little story for you, and that is the story of my interaction with Margot the bus driver.
My friend and I had just parked my car at the off-campus Freshman Parking lot after venturing off to Walmart and Goodwill to find her a Halloween costume. We had to catch the 84 bus so that we could get back to campus. The bus that runs route 84 is never all that big, so not many people can get on it at a time. Like any normal day, when the bus showed up, we got on, said hello to the driver, and took our seats. We then carried on with the conversation we were having before the bus showed up.
Well, before I get to the real point of this story, let me give you a little background information. I have been praying every day, for a little while now, for God to give me a "Divine Appointment." Basically, I have been asking Him to give me the opportunity to share His love and message with someone. I can tell you, God has been giving me that opportunity every single time I have been asking for it. I just refused to act on it.
But today, I took action.
The entire 10 minute bus ride back to campus, God had been telling me to ask the bus driver how I could pray for her. It may seem like a simple task, but for me it was very hard. I tend to have this fear of rejection, so it keeps me from actually approaching people.
After several minutes of rehearsing what I was going to say and fighting with myself, I told myself that I can ask her this simple question. I turned around and looked at my friend and whispered, "Do you think it would be good to ask the driver how we can pray for her?" My friend enthusiastically told me that it would be a great idea.
Once the bus stopped back at North Campus, my friend and I quickly grabbed our things and approached the front of the bus. The bus driver told us to have a good day and I knew that this was my time to ask her the question.
"Actually, we were wondering if there was anyway we could pray for you this week?"
That is what I said. I was so happy to actually ask her; that was the first time that I had acted on what God had put on my heart to say since I had been asking for Him to provide me with a "Divine Appointment." She did not actually give us any specific prayer requests, but she said that we could keep her in our prayers.
But the story gets better.
Right after we had assured her that we would pray for her this week, she smiled at the two of us and said something that has now given me the courage to go up to more people and act on the "Divine Appointments" God has set before me.
"You girls just made my day."
This one specific sentence from our bus driver, made my day too. It made my fear of rejection go right out the window.
I guess the point of this story is that when God tells you to talk to someone, take action. You never know if you will be the only light in that person's life all day.
