After much anticipation, Queen Ariana finally released her favorite single "God is a woman" from her upcoming album 'Sweetener.' With cryptic tweets teasing lyrics and song themes, fans were excited and anxious as to when we would understand why "God is a woman."
When it was finally released, I had the song on an endless loop. "God is a woman" delivered as an iconic pop single that Ariana would sure be remembered by. Along with the lyrics, Ariana released a phenomenal and aesthetically pleasing music video with it. The music video was about the beauty and strength within womanhood personifying Ariana as the center of the universe. However, Ariana Grande's music video was criticized for it serving into the male gaze.
Many believe that Ariana's song about woman empowerment was solely about how to pleasure a man. Personally, I cannot disagree more. I believe there is empowerment in being sexual and women who find comfort In being sexual regardless of who they are pleasing. I believe the conversation of choice is what gets misconstrued when discussing sexuality in women. If a woman did not choose to be sexualized and was sexualized without consent or awareness, then it is wrong and should be criticized. However, if someone like Ariana took the choice to be sexual and sensual in her music video, then I see nothing wrong.
GIAW's music video proves that women can be empowered by choosing to be sexual. I am sick of the narrative that being sexy or sexual is not empowering when it most definitely is. With lyrics saying "And I could be all the things you told me not to be," it is hard to believe Ariana made a music video pleasing the male gaze. Ariana is challenging it and her music video proves that. Moreover, the music video was fun, creative, and proved that God may just be a woman.
