I never seriously thought it would be this bad.
10-6 last season had Jets fans riding high. We felt great for the future. We had a bearded God from various teams who was an interception short of the promised land. A top 10 defense and a run game that looked to be even stronger after signing Matt Forte.
We lost a grinder week one. We blew the Bills out week two. We then proceeded to go on one of the ugliest stretches of losing football in recent memory. What made them even more depressing was not the final scores. The Jets were competitive in the majority of those games. And then after halftime, the team just came out flat.
Mohammad Wilkerson, after nearly winning Defensive Player of the Year is now one of PFF's lowest graded defensive linemen. Darrelle Revis has looked absolutely pedestrian. Don't get me started on Ryan Fitzpatrick. His regression from last season was something I held in the back of my mind when he put the team through that contract debacle. $12 million was better off burned as kindling.
While some fans think that the team should keep competing, I am firmly in the camp that a rebuild and reevaluation of the team is needed. Don't force Fitzpatrick back out there, we've seen all that he can offer. Give Petty a shot. This team should rather focus on developing its youth. DO NOT SPEND MORE ON FREE AGENTS. Let the team develop. We plugged in last year, and while it paid off in the short run, it is hurting us immensely in the long run.
While Bowles should not be spared, firing him is a massive mistake. A second-year head coach has to learn before entire seasons can be blamed on him. Much has been said about his strong relationship with Maccagnan. It is on the two of them to see this process through.
This is familiar territory for the team. We posted records much worse than this just two years ago.
But God help this team because rough waters are definitely ahead. Go Jets.
