The Westboro Baptist Church is a fundamentalist and extremist Christian group based in Topeka, KS. Famous, or rather infamous for their website www.godhatesfags.com as well as picketing and protesting funerals, the WBC is seen as a radical and unwelcome group by most.
It's a beautiful sight isn't it?
However, nobody is perfect correct? All of us fall short in some way, shape or form. Some of us abuse alcohol, some steal, some picket funerals.
The Westboro Baptist Church holds firm beliefs that homosexuality is wrong, the belief that Jews, Muslims and Hindus are abominable, and that Barack Obama is not only the Anti-Christ; but is actually part of an unholy trinity aligned with Satan and Pope Benedict XVI. They are known for hate speech calling most of their enemies "fags."
The WBC has been banned from several countries; including, but not limited to Canada and the United Kingdom. I'm sure you can see why.
But why do we hate those who hate us? Is it just a natural emotion? Most likely. If someone were to throw a brick at your face, you probably wouldn't go out for a beer with them within the hour.
You don't even have to be a Christian to have this ideology or belief style on either side of this topic. This is not a debate of whether the Westboro Baptist Church is a true Christian group or not. Who are we to judge?
Though this is not a contest of who can be the best Christian, I would like to remind you of a quote from Christ himself:
"But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you," (Matthew 5:44)
So, maybe they aren't the best at practicing a good, Christian life; but, don't judge, lest ye be judged, right?
I never said it was easy. We must be the bigger person, turn the other cheek, and rise above hate. What better way is there to rise up against hate than with love? Do we not remember the counterculture and the summer of love? Peace is the only way to move forward.
In the song "Common Threads" by Pat Humphries a theme of rising up against differences and oppression is celebrated.
"In the cold of fear and hatred, clothed in dignity we stand
We have pieced this quilt together, linking hearts with stitching hands."
I am by no means condoning the actions of the Westboro Baptist Church, however, they are still people of this universe. Maybe they don't share our beliefs but why not try to love and pray for them. Be the bigger person. Rise up against hatred; with love. After all, the gospel in one word is love. Love your neighbor as you love yourself. Perhaps it will have a chain reaction and spread to the WBC. If not, you did all you can do and you deserve to be proud of being the bigger person.
