How Apple Cider Changed My Life

Never in my whole life have I had apple cider, until today.

My whole life was changed. I felt that God had come down to Earth and brewed the cider himself. Before I tell you about how amazing apple cider is, let me tell you about my journey to this astonishing discovery.

The date is September 25th, 2016. My roommate and I decided that we wanted to go out and pick apples because we saw the sign before while driving into town. We got into the car and took off to pick some apples.

After about 5 minutes we saw a sign that said,”Fresh Apple Cider!” I was disappointed because I wanted to pick apples to eat, not drink apple juice. We decided to keep driving in hopes of finding a nearby farm that would cater towards the picking of apples.

We finally gave up when we discovered that we have just been driving in circles in farmland. We backtracked back to the little apple cider shop. I was upset because I really wanted to pick some apples and take pictures of the land. However, we went into the shop and this is where my life changed.

We were greeted by an older lady who was very sweet. She asked us if we had ever had apple cider. I had said no but my roommate had said yes. She offered us some samples of their fresh cider, and I swear my tastebuds went nuts. It tasted as if I just ate a liquefied apple. No, this was not just a bottle of apple juice you could buy at any grocery store, this was magic. It was a thicker liquid, almost syrup like, but more watery. It was a brown color, unlike the clear orange/red I usually see coming from my refrigerator. I don’t know what happened, but the cider woke me up inside, it felt like I took a shot of 20 energy drinks at once. It was the best thing that my tongue has ever tasted, I dream about this apple cider.

Of course right then and there my roommate and I had to buy a half-gallon of the special cider. This little shop also had apple butter, fresh honey, apples, and plenty of other organic products. All I know is that I’m going to become a regular and probably spend all my money buying apple cider.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
