God Bless America

Why I am not worried about this election

God Bless America

Donald Trump is the next president of the United States of America. There is rioting in the streets because of this. Celebrities are protesting the election results (honestly it’s not going to do anything acting like this. He won, get over it). I am not going to say that I supported him, but I also didn’t support any other presidential candidate. Yeah, I had literally no preference in who won this presidential election. My siblings and friends constantly told me about whatever candidate they supported and why I should also, but...that didn’t change my mind. I have no preference. I am not even ashamed to say that I had literally no worry going into this election.

Last night, when I went to bed, I got this feeling in my gut. I was a little worried. I scrolled through Facebook, Twitter, and all other social media, and saw riots, and protests, and terrible things being said about the future commander and chief of the most powerful country in the world. First of all, it’s completely disrespectful. Did you know that during Franklin D. Roosevelt’s time in office, the American people protected him, and all he stood for? The media protected the image of the president simply because he was in power. That is respect. The nation trusted him because he was voted into office. So, although the election was close, Donald Trump was voted into office, showing that the majority of the American people trusted him enough to run the country. Let’s trust him simply because of this. Unless Jesus himself came down to take residence in the Whitehouse, we could not have a perfect president. Secondly, God’s got it. We all know how the age old song goes:

God bless America

Land that I love

Stand beside her

Guide her

Through the night

With the light from above

It’s not just a song. God has truly blessed America, so it should be a land that we love. It should be a place we show our love to despite what is going on around us. We are called to stand by this nation, to love it through any trouble that will come, simply because we are in a democracy, and we are the guiding force. We are in control, we guide the nation through the good times and the dark times. It doesn’t matter who you voted for, and if you think the next president is a good thing or a dark time, you are called to stand by this country. If you truly want to guide the country to success, we must look upward. We must look to God for guidance. Okay, so this is just a song that we listen to on patriotic holidays, but really. Think about it. We are called to this song’s lyrics simply because God chose to place us in this country, a this time for a reason.

Here's the thing. The president doesn't have as much power as people think. There's checks and balances in place. Ya, I get it. Trump is kinda a jerk, but are the citizens of our country really rioting bc they think that he can't be used by the God of the universe? Are we really protesting bc they think that God has taken back the blessing He gave our nation? Is there a reason to riot if we truly believe that God has a plan and that He loves us enough to use whoever we vote into power? The Israelites demanded a human king and God still loved them. They went back and forth between God and earthly rulers for so many years there is an entire book of the Bible about it (Judges-check it out. It’s a good read). If God saw the Israelites through all of that, why are Americans rioting in the streets? If God saw the Israelites through it all why are we posting on social media about how we are leaving the country? We are not forgotten by the God of the universe so it is so infuriating to see the anger in our home. I mean, God blessed America, so it will always be the land we should love simply because God loves it and He is present here.

The Bible says “Do not be afraid” 365 times. If something is so that often, don’t you think that we should maybe not be afraid? Fear is the absence of love, but because God loves us, and loves this nation, there is no space for fear.

  • Genesis 28:15 “Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go, and will bring you back to this land. For I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”
  • Exodus 33:14 “And he said, “My presence will go with you, and I will give you rest.”
  • Psalm 23:4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”

Isaiah 41:10 “Do not fear, for I am with you; Do not anxiously look about you, for I am your God. I will strengthen you, surely I will help you, Surely I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

As college students, we are all familiar with the horror show that is course registration week. Whether you are an incoming freshman or selecting classes for your last semester, I am certain that you can relate to how traumatic this can be.

1. When course schedules are released and you have a conflict between two required classes.

Bonus points if it is more than two.

Raising the minimum wage to a livable wage would not only benefit workers and their families, it would also have positive impacts on the economy and society. Studies have shown that by increasing the minimum wage, poverty and inequality can be reduced by enabling workers to meet their basic needs and reducing income disparities.

I come from a low-income family. A family, like many others in the United States, which has lived paycheck to paycheck. My family and other families in my community have been trying to make ends meet by living on the minimum wage. We are proof that it doesn't work.

April Ludgate

Every college student knows and understands the struggle of forcing themselves to continue to care about school. Between the piles of homework, the hours of studying and the painfully long lectures, the desire to dropout is something that is constantly weighing on each and every one of us, but the glimmer of hope at the end of the tunnel helps to keep us motivated. While we are somehow managing to stay enrolled and (semi) alert, that does not mean that our inner-demons aren't telling us otherwise, and who is better to explain inner-demons than the beloved April Ludgate herself? Because of her dark-spirit and lack of filter, April has successfully been able to describe the emotional roller-coaster that is college on at least 13 different occasions and here they are.
