Gobble Gobble: What It's Like To Be A College Student Home For Thanksgiving Dinner

Let's get through the first course before you start questioning me on post-graduation plans...

It's that time of year again. The time of year where the holiday's snuck up on us, and it's already time to dig into that Thanksgiving turkey with all of your very inquisitive family members. When in college, Thanksgiving takes on a whole new meaning than when it did when you lived at home. So here's a list of what I believe to be some of the joys and annoyances of being a college student at Thanksgiving dinner.

1. FINALLY SOME REAL FOOD!!!

After months of being forced to eat the same gross and debatably "real food" from a college dining facility, it is a much-needed change of pace to finally come home to a smorgasbord of authentic Thanksgiving classics and favorites! Don't even get me started about all of the leftovers that both you and your roommate(s) are going to try to simultaneously stuff into your tiny mini fridge after you get back to your dorm after Thanksgiving break...

2. Stop Keeping Tabs On My Food and Alcohol Intake

There is nothing more annoying than a family member offering unwanted commentary on how much you are eating or drinking at Thanksgiving. I will say it one time and one time only--Thanksgiving is not the time or place to be on a diet!

3. Please Please Please Stop Asking About My Grades

Regardless of whether you are doing great or poorly at this point in the semester you are tired of constantly answering the same questions about your GPA. Personally, it is no one's business except your own, and Thanksgiving dinner is a break from everything college, so why would I want to continuously discuss it?

4. Homework Is Not An Option For Thanksgiving Break

Thanksgiving Break is a time to get that much needed end of the semester break before finals start. So to any professors that intend on drowning their students in assignments over break, don't do it because trust me, I will not be doing any homework over the holidays...WE WERE ON A BREAK!

5. And For Those Students Taking Extra Time To Graduate...

Not everybody graduates college in the pre-conceived four years that some students finish in, and that's okay. Everybody works at their own pace and sometimes needs more time to do well in their classes and finally earn that diploma. So leave these students alone at the Thanksgiving dinner table because they don't want to hear your reasons as to why you think they are slacking, when all they are doing is trying their hardest!

So while we all await for the next few days to pass so we can finally get our gobble gobble on, just remember that Thanksgiving is all about surrounding yourself with family and being thankful for what you do have, not dwell on what you don't. And until Thanksgiving finally does arrive...this is how I will be waiting in the meantime...

HAPPY THANKSGIVING EVERYONE!!!!

11 Things Summer Nannies Can Relate To

There are plenty of obstacles that come when taking care of kids, but it's a very rewarding experience.

As a college student, being a nanny over the summer is both enjoyable and challenging. Underneath the seemingly perfect trips to the pool or countless hours spent playing Monopoly are the obstacles that only nannies will understand. Trading in your valuable summer vacation in return for three months spent with a few children less than half your age may seem unappealing, but so many moments make it rewarding. For my fellow summer nannies out there, I know you can relate.

There are a lot of really easy, common names in the U.S. and while many of those simple names have different spellings, most of the time, pronunciation is not an issue that those people need to worry about. However, others are not as fortunate and often times give up on corrections after a while. We usually give an A+ for effort. So, as you could probably imagine, there are a few struggles with having a name that isn’t technically English. Here are just a few…

Daydreaming

day·dream (ˈdāˌdrēm/): a series of pleasant thoughts that distract one's attention from the present.

Daydreams, the savior of our life in class. Every type of student in the classroom does it at least once, but most cases it is an everyday event, especially in that boring class -- you know the one. But what are we thinking while we are daydreaming?

Puerto Ricans. They are very proud people and whether they were born on the island or born in the United States by Puerto Rican parent(s). It gets even better when they meet another fellow Puerto Rican or Latino in general. You’ll know quickly if they are Puerto Rican whether the flag is printed somewhere on their person or whether they tell you or whether the famous phrase “wepa!” is said.

If it hurts now, it'll hurt again. Not because you're gullible or naive, only because you fall fast, hard, and you do it every time.

We fall each and every time with the complete and utter confidence that someone will be there to catch us. Now that person we SWORE we were never going to fall for has our hearts, and every time we see them our palms start sweating. The butterflies in our stomach start to soar and our hearts are entirely too close to bursting out of our chests.
