Goals I Have Set For The Semester

Just because the semester has ended doesn't mean the work stops.

Goals I Have Set For The Semester

Summer vacation has started and it's easy to become unmotivated. I try to challenge myself every day to reach new goals in school. Now that the semester is over there is nothing to look forward to. I came up with three simple goals that I know I am able to achieve.

This summer I need to get a job. I just moved to New Castle Delaware from New Jersey. I'm used to having a job on campus and having a steady income. Now that I am home, I need to find a way to continue the money flow into my account. I want to help pay bills around my house while I am home. I want to go to the beach eventually and visit an amusement park. I like being busy and hate being bored so having a job will really keep me sane. Life is just better when you have a job.

Another goal I have this summer is to create content every week for Odyssey. I love writing for Odyssey. I previously made a video displaying my poetry and I plan on making more. It is a great way to express myself and make my voice heard. I could have taken the easy road and asked for a break from Odyssey but I think the best decision for me is to stick with it and continue writing while I have the time. Odyssey is one way I keep my writing skills sharp and I don't intend on becoming sloppy when the Fall semester comes around.

Getting in shape this summer will be another one of my goals. I have new obligations next semester and I need the energy to stay on top of my game. I was asked to be the new President of Speak which is a talent based organization. We host open mics and give performers a platform to showcase their talent and be seen. I can't wait to get in there and host events. I hope Speak can be a way of unleashing talent within other students. I am going to need to be in my best shape in order to do my best work. I was also considering joining the rugby club that just started Wesley. I was considering it because I love to skate and that would be a solidified exercise commitment. I would just like to lose a few more pounds and keep it off just for my piece of mind.

In retrospect, the summer can get mundane and boring if you do not have a plan. I need a consistent income in order to enjoy the summer so I will be getting a job soon. Since I will have all this free time, writing for Odyssey will be a priority. In the midst of all that I will be taking care of body more carefully in order to lose weight. This is how I am preparing for the fall semester. Just because the semester has ended, does not mean that the work has ended.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies. Here is a few signs that you may live in the library, whether you'd like to admit it or not.
