5 Goals For Maintaining A Healthy And Mindful Routine Throughout The Summer

Summer is finally here and I feel like I have not stopped moving for about a week now. We all have continuous responsibilities somewhere. By the end of the day, I know it's a time for relaxing, but the work is never really over.

5 Goals For Maintaining A Healthy And Mindful Routine Throughout The Summer
Alana Charboneau

I am just constantly moving, whether it's outside exercising or driving somewhere — I like to stay busy. But, of course, in order to be able to stay busy and then survive at school, I need to have money, so a summer job is important. I find that I can never sit still so I find myself always busy. I like to be out and doing things, especially on really nice days.

I have conjured up five simple, doable, and rejuvenating goals that I believe will lead to a more positive attitude, healthier body (and mind) to keep myself going each day, so when I get back to school I am more motivated than ever.

Now, I am not a person of routine because I love to do different things each day, so finding activities and hobbies that can be alternated and mixed up help to keep the change more exciting and purposeful.

1. Stretch every morning

Find your focus and relax your body from a long sleep, when you wake up, or a long day, every night before you go to sleep. Also, before and after every workout and when standing after sitting for a while. I have found that stretching is one of the most relaxing and tension-relieving activities to do. There is such much strength in the patience that comes with focusing mentally on your own self and really stretching your body out. Relieving tension in your muscles and tendons, I mean really stretching them out after working out and growing that flexibility in your arms and legs will help tremendously with soreness; it keeps the blood and nutrients flowing to those muscles.

2. Do at least an hour of physical activity a day

Whether that be running five miles outside, swimming in a pool or walking a dog, do something that keeps your body in active motion, maybe even enough to break a sweat. Being physically active every day keeps your mind active and more open. All these chemicals activating in your body allow you to stay on your feet throughout the day with less of a hard crash at the end of the day.

3. Do a puzzle, play a card game, read a book

Challenge your mind every day. They are not only for children, but they are also for everybody. When we actively do puzzles and different challenges, we think of different strategies and new ways of thinking of different situations. I believe that puzzles make us more aware of our surroundings and allows us to make decisions in more strategic ways. When our mind is actively thinking and conscious of our space and time, there is no lapse of time for degeneration or "blank space" thinking.

4. Eat colorful meals

I know that eating really bad food sounds really good, but you always kind of regret it later when you feel lazy and tired. Eating nutritious, colorful, filling and FULL of protein meals will give you such efficient amounts of energy throughout the day. You will feel more full for longer and you won't feel weak or low on calories- haha. I say eat healthily but I'm over here eating unhealthy as well. The reason I type it out for my audience to read is that it makes it more real and more set in stone. Once I say these are my goals, I will hold myself accountable for them and then I will see the growth.

5. Have fun and get some sun

Take in every day as a new opportunity to feel good, have a good day, and enjoy the time off you do have. School is stressful so it makes sense as to why most don't like it and can't wait to get away from it. All I'll say it make sure what you choose to do doesn't end up defining you in a negative way. Be yourself, create new hobbies, new friends, explore things you've never seen before...be alive and be good.

These may seem like cliché and basic goals, but that's the point. They are so commonly practiced by so many people and they're effective, which is why we keep going. You may not see results instantly, but these are goals that you must continuously practice in order to see improvement and see more positive changes. I hope that when you are finished reading, you'll think of things you can do differently to bring more significance and meaning to life.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

"A Christmas Story" is the star on top of the tree.

The Great Christmas Movie Debate

One staple of the Christmas season is sitting around the television watching a Christmas movie with family and friends. But of the seemingly hundreds of movies, which one is the star on the tree? Some share stories of Santa to children ("Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"), others want to spread the Christmas joy to adults ("It's a Wonderful Life"), and a select few are made to get laughs ("Elf"). All good movies, but merely ornaments on the Christmas tree of the best movies. What tops the tree is a movie that bridges the gap between these three movies, and makes it a great watch for anyone who chooses to watch it. Enter the timeless Christmas classic, "A Christmas Story." Created in 1983, this movie holds the tradition of capturing both young and old eyes for 24 straight hours on its Christmas Day marathon. It gets the most coverage out of all holiday movies, but the sheer amount of times it's on television does not make it the greatest. Why is it,
then? A Christmas Story does not try to tell the tale of a Christmas miracle or use Christmas magic to move the story. What it does do though is tell the real story of Christmas. It is relatable and brings out the unmatched excitement of children on Christmas in everyone who watches. Every one becomes a child again when they watch "A Christmas Story."

It’s here; that time of year when college students turn into preschoolers again. We cry for our mothers, eat everything in sight, and whine when we don’t get our way. It’s finals, the dreaded time of the semester when we all realize we should have been paying attention in class instead of literally doing anything else but that. Everyone has to take them, and yes, unfortunately, they are inevitable. But just because they are here and inevitable does not mean they’re peaches and cream and full of rainbows. Surviving them is a must, and the following five phases are a reality for all majors from business to art, nursing to history.
