Why Having Goals Has Become Exceedingly Important

In a world where someone can become "verified" or " Instagram-famous", goals are becoming exceedingly important. Some people will have the goal of being famous on social media, and that's great. Social media is a prominent part of our daily lives and it's great to have meme accounts and celebrities to pine after and YouTubers to watch.

But we need goals. Without goals, our lives have no direction. We wander around aimlessly looking for something to capture our attention for fleeting moments while avoiding real responsibilities. Goals hold us accountable for our actions and keep us on track to achieve the things we genuinely desire.

Sure, people set New Year's Resolutions every year, but how many people actually stick to those? How many people truly achieve their life-long dreams and goals? Not nearly as many as one would hope or expect. But that's why life is great. Every day is a new chance to start over and decide that today is going to be the day that changes the rest of your life.

Do you want to see a change in your physical appearance? Do you want to graduate from college in four years? Do you want to be a collegiate athlete? Do you want to be a criminal defense lawyer?

SET GOALS. STICK TO THEM. BELIEVE IN YOUR GOALS AND YOURSELF.

Some people have a hard time setting goals. Some have never set goals for themselves before. Some don't know even where to start. So start small and ask for guidance when setting your goals.

I was always taught to set goals for myself as a child so it comes easily to me. But I understand that it can be daunting, having to hold yourself accountable. So here's a few tips on how to set and achieve your goals:

Setting Goals:

1. Have a long-term goal in mind. EX: Graduate from UH in 4 years with a 3.50

2. Create steps to get there. EX: Check grades with professors every two weeks; Take 15 hours every semester.

3. Give yourself deadlines. EX: Outline classes for each semester with an advisor by the third week of class.

Do this for every long-term and short-term goal you may have.

Achieving Your Goals:

1. Share your goals with a friend, parent, significant other that will help keep you on track.

2. Put your goals somewhere you will see them every day, like a fridge, bathroom mirror, or whiteboard.

3. Check a goal off when you reach it. It gives you a sense of satisfaction and motivates you to achieve the next one.

4. Reward yourself when you achieve a short or long-term goal. Go celebrate with friends or just rejoice that you completed it.

At the end of the day, you have to be dedicated to achieving your goals but with these tips, dedication and effort, and a positive mindset, you will be where you want in no time.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
