Sorority recruitment is coming up and everyone is either eagerly awaiting bid day or scoffing and turning their heads up. Most people think that their mind is already made up about greek life when they come to college. While that may or may not be true, everyone can benefit from going through recruitment.
Going through college and signing up for recruitment, especially as a freshman, can be scary and seem like a big step into the unknown. A common misconception, though, is that signing up for recruitment means you're definitely going to join a sorority. However, signing up for recruitment is not making any sort of commitment. Plenty of people sign up and decide to never actually join a sorority. Sometimes it's not the right time for them, sometimes they're not ready, and sometimes things just don't work out.
The thing is, even if you don't think you want to join a sorority, you shouldn't rule out going through recruitment. First, even if you're only slightly considering going greek, you should sign up and go through recruitment. The worst thing that can happen, is that you never go through recruitment, but you decide later on that greek life might be something for you. Now you have to wait until next semester to join.
The point is, you don't want to pass up an opportunity for something amazing because you were too stubborn to admit that you might not be sure exactly what you want. Not to mention, so much more can come out of sorority recruitment. I met amazing friends just by going through recruitment. I met people who went to other sororities and I remained friends with them.
Going through recruitment is not a promise to join greek life. But, if you do go through recruitment, meet amazing women that you really connect with, and do choose to join a sorority, it's only going to continue to benefit you. My sorority has brought me close to some of my best friends. I never have to do anything alone because I have a sisterhood full of people to do things with. I've made connections with people from all over because they recognize my letters. I've even, at one point, made a personal connection with my boss because we could connect over our sorority.
Finally, sororities are not all about partying and hanging out. I've learned more about leadership, business, and professional communication than I ever imagined I would. When, and if, you decide to go through recruitment, that's something that you'll learn. The connections, friendships, and professionalism in sorority goes much deeper than what we see on the surface.
