Imagine entering a grocery store and while handling a food product there's a little section in the back that reads "GMO or NON-GMO". What does this mean? GMO is short for genetic modified organisms in food products. Scientists and bio-engineers introduced this process where specific genes are added to specific organisms in foods to create healthier, larger and sustainable foods while also being eco-friendly. Unfortunately, new studies have shown the total opposite throughout the years.
How GMOs affect us?
Genetically modifying foods has benefited society as a population yet these benefits come with many risk factors. For example, the environment will become affected by plantation such as the seeds modified will negatively affect anyone or anything that consumes it and its surroundings on land. Genetic modification of foods was at first called a "greener act" meaning that farming was done properly and less pesticides and chemicals would be used because of this. Mistakes will also be made in genetics causing minor defects to arise during specific processes and testings. With this being said, consumers should have the power to know what is in the food that they indulge yet legislation and government administrations think otherwise. These government administrations should have more testing for risk factors so these processes can lead to more healthier lifestyles and with this, proper labeling of GMOs should be done as well for misconceptions of GMOs being diminished. Only two forms of genetic modification processes are tested for health risks: Transgenic and RNA interference. Transgenic is a genetic modification process that affects one to four genes while recombining DNA from other species. RNA interference is another process that recombines RNA from other species affecting only one to two genes.
The government needs to do more testings on genetic modification processes to better GMOs and have safer food products for the people. Every genetic modification process is different and some need to be more tested than others yet the government chooses to test these processes on the people when GMOs are already in stores.
