The "word of the year" for 2015 (according to the Oxford Dictionary) was an emoji. Although that was not surprising thanks to all of those iOS updates, there are so many more words that the past year has given us. Here are some official terms and definitions with which 2016 provided us:
1. "Chicken Enthusiast": profession of a Bachelor contestant in Season 20
2. Harambe: 2016 write-in presidential election candidate and deceased gorilla
3. La Croix: choice drink of common white girl that is pronounced about a million different ways
4. Pokemon GO: video game that crowded cities with hunch-backed people and the inspiration for many 2016 Halloween costumes
5. Mugging: many famous people's choice victimizing crime (i.e. olympians (Ryan Lochte), Kardahsians (most of them) and super models)
6. Snake: blonde country singer turned pop artist with many skeletons in her...cage? She rehashed some beef with Kanye and started some beef with Calvin Harris
7. USA: the epitome of athletics and strategy, as seen in the 2016 Olympic games (thanks to The Final Five, The U.S. Swimming Association and the tall men and women who dominated the basketball competition)
8. Dab: (the PG -- not literal -- defintion) An action that represents utter happiness and dance ability; produced by placing face in the bend of one's arm while thrusting remaining arm in the air with flat palm
9. Daniel: a boy who is back at it again in his white Vans
10. Justice: the feeling every American felt when Leonardo DiCaprio (finally) won an Oscar
11. College of Charleston: a world-renowned institution dating back to 1770 that has the magical power of being beautiful every day of the year
Just like that, another year is in the books. We all started 2016 devastated by the news of One Direction's "hiatus," but ended the year victorious with the solitude of knowing that the Jonas Brothers are 66.66% back in our lives. Hang on tight for 2017!
