"I'm so busy!"
How many times have you heard someone say that? I know these words have graced my lips hundreds of times in the past 24 hours. Probably thousands of times in the last week.
Why are we always so busy? Are we busy for a purpose? Are we busy for the greater good? Perhaps we find a societal pressure to fill our plates to the brim. Perhaps we have the best of intentions but end up piling on so much that we are only giving a fraction of our focus to each task.
We over glorify being busy.
Lately, I've found myself feeling guilty when I have downtime. Surely there is something I can be doing, something to keep me busy. But why am I so afraid to sit still?
The question of why I am afraid to sit still quickly gave way to a much deeper question. Why are we so afraid to sit with God? Sit and nourish the human bodies we are given, bodies that can only do so much?
I have no correct answer to these questions, but I have two insights I believe the Lord has laid on my heart to share.
1. We are afraid to sit and give our worries to the Lord because it is seen as inefficient in worldly eyes. We want to look like we are taking action and if we sit and give it to God, that can be seen as apathy. We care more about how the world sees us than following the instructions of our Savior.
2. We are afraid of what God will reveal to us when we sit and listen. Convictions from Christ aren't pretty. Sometimes the epiphany you have is that your heart is hard to a certain topic or your pride is inhibiting your ministry. In this world, we strive to be Christ-like which is unattainable because of sin... so when we dive deeper in our faith, more and more is revealed. Sometimes those things revealed to us are things we don't want to hear and don't want to work on.
Take a minute today and sit with God. Listen.
The over glorification of busy-ness within our society is to the determent of the great rest the Lord wants to offer you. Even God rested the 7th day, setting a perfect example for us to follow.
God's Blessings.
