With the recent political state of the United States, a debate between nationalism and globalism has arisen. The term nationalism describes peoples' individual tendency to support their own country's policies and decisions. This stems from a strong feeling of patriotism and causes people to value the success of their own country over that of the world as a whole. A nationalist mindset leads people to think of their own progress before the world's.
Globalism refers to a mindset that favors the overall success of the world over the success of any single country. In political terms, this could mean open borders or lenient immigration policies. Although these types of policies may not help the individual country, they allow for global prosperity. Both of these ways of thinking are very different, but neither one of them is more correct than the other. A balance of both ideas could allow for the prosperity of individual countries as well as the world as a whole. To understand this idea better, we should start to think about it on a more simplistic level.
Let's suppose that you are on a soccer team and your team needs to make one more goal to win the game. You are very tired though and you don't think you will be able to make the goal. What should you do? Since you don't think you can make the goal, maybe a compromise would help both you and your team. Instead of pushing yourself to make the goal, you can pass the ball to another strong player on your team so they can make the goal. This way, your team still wins the game and you didn't have to put too much physical pressure on yourself.
In a similar manner, the United States can make policies that benefit both itself and the rest of the world. We can do things such as protecting our borders but still allowing immigration so promote a balance between globalism and nationalism.
