Glitter, Hairspray, And 6 A.M.

Let's talk about all things fabulous.

You could absolutely say I have spent the better part of my life completely immersed in the steaming hot world of show choir. There’s something to be said for the glamorous morning stops in a random city’s McDonalds, and the late night bus rides that always get a little... out of hand. Some may know show choir to be the same as TV’s "Glee," however, that doesn't even touch the surface. Here are a few things every “show choir kid” can relate to.

1. Sequins. Everywhere. Glitter. EVERYWHERE.

You would think through the layers of tights and lollies, glitter wouldn't manage to end up where it does... but you'd be wrong.

2. While we’re on the topic of sequins...

There is nothing worse than the last minute stressful, hectic dress rehearsals with sequin-coated risers. Sequins may not be big, but they are slippery!

3. Let’s talk about hairspray!

Almost like glitter, during a show choir performance, hairspray WILL end up in places you cannot even imagine. Girls spritz hairspray under their skirts to keep them from sticking to tights, on their faces to hold that god-awful makeup, and on the bottom of their shoes to keep from sliding on stage. Speaking of spraying character shoes, that’s a myth I'm still not convinced is true!

    4. How about those “Show Choir Famous” kids!

I am really not kidding — this is a thing. Every once in a while there will be an outstanding performer in a group’s show, usually an incredible soloist, that basically everyone in the show choir world swoons over. In case you're wondering, these do usually tend to be the boy brand of human.

      5. Arriving at a competition with no makeup on...

...then later emerging from the homeroom looking like you're about to step onto a runway, is yet another wonder of the performance world.

        6. Setting 10 alarms for 3:30 a.m., 3:35 a.m., 3:37 a.m., and so on because you have to be on the bus at an ungodly early hour.

After that lovely, early morning wake up, you have a day jam-packed full of performing, finals and a very long bus ride back home. Goodness me.

          7. The choreographer calling out random noises in the music as opposed to the words because they never really know them.

          8. Not being allowed to eat or drink any dairy or soda products for one entire week prior to a performance is a super fun

Good luck to all my fellow Diet Coke addicts, I know what you are going through.

          9. Coping with disgusting cafeteria food, but paying for a gourmet meal.

For those of us fortunate enough to attend the legendary Show Choir Camps of America, this point speaks for itself.

          10. Finally, let’s not forget the feeling in the pit of your stomach before the curtain rises.

While standing on stage with a group of people you spent months sharing blood, sweat and tears with perfecting one 20 minute show, even the most confident of performers feel the pressure.

This list is comprised of 10 feelings every show choir kiddo knows very, very well. Looking back on the years I spent singing my heart out on stage, they are some of my fondest memories. I would not trade the early mornings and hash browns for the world. Sometimes I even wish I could do it all over again.

This is for the girls who have dealt with an emotionally, mentally, physically or verbally abusive father.

The ones who have grown up with a false lens of what love is and how relationships should be. The ones who have cried themselves to sleep wondering why he hurts you and your family so much. This is for all the girls who fall in love with broken boys that carry baggage bigger than their own, thinking it's their job to heal them because you watched your mother do the same.

          Blair Waldorf Quote
"DESTINY IS FOR LOSERS. IT'S JUST A STUPID EXCUSE TO WAIT FOR THINGS TO HAPPEN INSTEAD OF MAKING THEM HAPPEN." - BLAIR WALDORF.

The world stopped in 2012 when our beloved show "Gossip Girl" ended. For six straight years, we would all tune in every Monday at 9:00 p.m. to see Upper Eastside royalty in the form of a Burberry headband clad Blair Waldorf. Blair was the big sister that we all loved to hate. How could we ever forget the epic showdowns between her and her frenemy Serena Van Der Woodsen? Or the time she banished Georgina Sparks to a Christian summer camp? How about that time when she and her girls took down Bart Bass? Blair is life. She's taught us how to dress, how to be ambitious, and most importantly, how to throw the perfect shade.

          too tired to care

We've all been there. From move-in day to the first finals week in college, your first term is an adventure from start to finish. In honor of college decisions coming out recently, I want to recap some of the most common experiences college freshmen experience.

          1. The awkward hellos on move-in day.

You're moving your stuff onto your floor, and you will encounter people you don't know yet in the hallway. They live on your floor, so you'll awkwardly smile and maybe introduce yourself. As you walk away, you will wonder if they will ever speak to you again, but don't worry, there's a good chance that you will make some great friends on your floor!

Recently I completed my freshman year of college, and boy, what an experience. It was a completely new learning environment and I can't believe how much I learned. In an effort to save time, here are the ten biggest lessons I learned from my first year of college.

          1. Everyone is in the same boat

For me, the scariest part of starting school was that I was alone, that I wouldn't be able to make any friends and that I would stick out. Despite being told time and time again that everyone had these same feelings, it didn't really click until the first day when I saw all the other freshman looking as uneasy and uncomfortable as me. Therefore, I cannot stress this enough, everyone is feeling as nervous as you.
